my first mod - passenger map light
just completed my first mod, and I'm pretty pleased with it. Replaced the passenger map light with an led one, but with some special electronics in it: when first turned on, it gives a red light, bright enough to read maps and see basic stuff by, whilst retaining night vision for the driver. Pressing it again turns it off. But if you press the switch again straight away, it comes back on but this time bright white, giving lots of light to see more by. No need to modify the Discovery switches or anything - fits the existing passenger lamp socket with no problems.
First click - red light
Off then immediately on: white light
Had to find a way of attaching the light to the t10 socket - found that a PC circuit board has connectors at about the right width, so chopped one up, soldered the connections to it (4 sets of contacts, soldering 2 together for each contact) - and it fits fine. Will probably replace this with a doctored wedge fit led for a neater fit, but it works as is.
I've been keeping an eye out for red LED's without any joy, wanted them all round as kids have a habit of having lights on when in the back.Paul.

If it's just the cover you want off, I used a table knife just to help prise it off at the edges.
I went a bit OTT with mine, I think they are the same bulbs used in the flood lights at Hampden 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Thanks. Found out by brute force !
Pulling the forward (windscreen) edge is the way as there are big lugs on the back edge
