Making posts uneditable after 15 minutes?
After the recent debacle, would it be possible to lock posts, say 15 minutes after they are posted, so that the original poster cannot alter them - a moderator could still edit them providing the op gives a suitable reason for it? The for sale forums would obviously have to be treated a bit differently.
Just wondered, as that is what happens with another forum I use. It would stop threads looking stupid due to the number of 'deleted' posts.1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

Not sure of the full details, as I only witnessed half of it - posts being deleted.
This thread might give you a bit more info.

Or, could the posts be re-instated from the servers?

I don't think it's a good idea. What other evidence would we have then of a good flounce?

Personally, I like the fact that this forum allows editing of posts to get rid of mistakes, make corrections and additions/updates easily. I think 15 minutes would be an issue and could add significantly to the mods' workload; a week might be less of a problem (if FS&W, Group Buys, Sponsors etc. threads could be omitted), but being able to restore posts sounds like the best option?Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

As I said last time this happened we only allow 15 minutes editing time on the Forum I run for this very reason and it creates very little work for my moderation team maybe one request a week to edit a post if that.
Restoration is only an option if have someone that can run a sql query to only restore specific bits on the db and then only if the last backup contains the missing posts.==================================

It would do if you had all my requests to add missing apostrophes... Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

There's a bit of a difference if your forum is running at say 4k members vs the nearly 40k on here .... OK I appreciate that not all of those will be active and we generally have less than a few hundred online at any one time but throughput of posts is significant.
I think that if it became an ongoing problem then yes we might have to look at it but we only have had a few real toy throwing users in recent times. If we did go for a 15 minute lock then to mitigate corrections I would want to see evidence of an A level English Language certificate before you were allowed to post 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

That's me stuffed, only got a B for O level Eng Lang.
A levels were save for proper subjects, Geology, Physics & Maths.
What are A levels? LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
