Discovery 4 MY13 HSE - Tapping / Ticking engine noise |
|
Hi All. Have just joined the Disco club - a proud owner of a MY13 Disco 4 HSE
One quick question, and I could be being completely paranoid here..... After driving round with the windows down yesterday, I noticed quite a loud tapping or ticking noise from the engine, especially so when passing parked cars - seems to amplify the noise. I've taken a video (below) and sent it to the dealer (Land Rover) for their advice and they think it's normal. I'm taking it back to them on Saturday for them to have a proper listen (and have the 2 year used car warranty so not overly worried) but was wondering if anybody here has the same noise or whether somebody knows what is causing it. It's probably just a normal noise for a diesel engine but once you pick up on a noise it's all you can hear!
Anyway, here's the video:
Thanks all !

Cheers for the reply
I bought it a week ago from a Land Rover dealer so it "should" have had the oil etc checked. It's done 46000 miles and the last service was in March (45033 miles) ('A' has been ticked in the service book where it says Oil Service). I tried to check the oil level in the service menu but it says "Not Available" so I'm going to take it for a run and check it again. I'm guessing the dealer will need to check the hydraulic valve clearance - I'm good with computers but not car mechanics!!

Sounds just like an SDV6 to me 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I wouldnt be happy with that, almost sounds like an injector seal blowing.
Might be better to video it on idle ie no revs at all and move camera/phone from one side of the engine to the other.
A cheap mechs stethoscope from ebay might help

Getting some great advice here guys. Much appreciated. Some ammo I can take along to the dealer on Saturday. I'll get a video of it idle like you have suggested and will post it here.

to check the oil level leave the car parked with the engine off for about 10 mins then put the ignition on (engine off) and go to the service menu it should be there

Thanks Luapno. I tried when the engine was cold so probably explains the error.
Quick question for those in the know - would a blown injector valve get louder as the engine warms up? The noise in the video is definitely quieter on start up.

it should work when cold, there is a timer that allows the oil to settle back in the sump after the engine is switched off before measuring.
A good old fashioned dip stick would be a whole lot easier

I could be wrong though... I'm a bit mutton .... so it's best to have it checked 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Its not a valve but a copper seal that the injector tightens down onto to create a seal, Im not saying thats what it is but what it could be.
As engine warms up everything expands and the noise could get quieter.
If they reckon its okay you can always ask them to start up a couple of others for you to listen to
Must be some ore D4 engine vids on youtube?

Here's another video on idle from side to side. Will be taking it to a nearer dealer tomorrow for their opinion before going to the dealer I bought it from on Saturday.
