Engines for the D5
I read recently that JLR will be building their own six cylinder engines from late 2017 onwards. This makes sense with them having started building their own four cylinder diesel engines recently and petrol ones coming along soon.
The question it raises for me is whether the D5 will go through the same 'problem' as the DS in that it might be launched with old engines for only a short period of time? I felt that this was strange with the DS in that just delaying the launch for six month would have been better IMHO. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.2014MY Discovery

You are assuming in this eco greenie world that we live in they are not just sticking with the 2l Ingenium engine. Re keeping original engine, would have thought it would be a bit of a job to engineer in V6 engines when the car will eventually end up with a straight 4 or 6 lumps?
Agreed. While only speculation on my part, the difference in footprint and underbody packaging for a V6 versus a straight 6 would make that difficult to deliver.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

The D5 will feature new engines from the start, with the 2ltr Ingenium rumoured to be the entry level offering.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

How many hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions have JLR spent on the Wolverhampton plant, with plans to double that in the not so distant future? Do you seriously think they will then buy in engines from somewhere else?

Of course not Derek
It takes time to extend an engine plant and as we can probably summise, it also takes time to 'add pots' to enlarged blocks Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

It could be worse, they could lop a cylinder off and make it a three pot.
As hinted by the cheeky grin on the "tour guide" on the factory visit when asked about such a possibility.

no curve at all - only minor differences between a petrol and diesel engine (as was explained to us)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I thought the ingenium was a modular engine...meaning it could be easily adapted to different variants. My money is on a straight 6, 3 litre3 Flash Indicators

2 litre divided by 4 = 500ml
3 litre divided by 6 = 500ml too!

Ive an idea they could drop an electric motor into the place where the 4th pot was In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
It's hard to go wrong with a nice straight six, but it's not the greatest of choices for a 4WD vehicle. If not now, with the way things are going, could it tempt LR to produce a FWD variant some time down the line? Straight six is a great engine. Had several motors with them. I am sure with all the modern technology they will be able to make them more efficient. As for the BMW 6 it is a great engine. It's was putting out less horses in the range rover than it was in a 330d! I don't know why they tamed it down so much. The range rover was too much car for that engine.3 Flash Indicators
