Cyclist Hits Me Car written off

Last week a cyclist tried to beat my wife across a junction. hit the wing and landed on my windscreen and bonnet Censored Censored . My wife didn't see him when he tried to dash across the giveaway sign. Anyway by all accounts he tumbled over the wing smashed the windscreen and the roof lining came down, The cyclist was taken away for a look at at but was later discharged with minor cut and bruises

After the usual breathalyse the driver not the cyclists routine, the car was taken to impound by the police..

So Admiral call to say the car is at local loss assessor and is a write off due the value of the car outweighing the repair costs, estimated at £6k Shocked Shocked Shocked

I'v had the car 4yrs and admittedly had up and downs with it, but have spent££££'s getting it right Whistle Whistle

Now i'm lucky if i am looking at market value for the 56 plate, new MOT and Road tax 2 months ago,

So options are apart from taking the cash and running, is i may buy it back at salvage price. and this will offset against the cost of the claim so i hope what i have left can repair it.

Its classed as Cat D so will need a new MOT. Does anyone have any experience of similar Question s= circumstances. The car has no structural damage more cosmetic. Bonnet a bit of the dash and wing.

28 yrs driving and it my first experience of this.

Unlucky chap, thats rough. Contact DiscoDunc, he's previously bought back and striped his writeoff. Good luck.
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Can't personally help you but lad at work had is VW van written off by an uninsured driver . Bought it back and used the insurance payout to fix it back up using another body shop repair place and most of the mechanics himself. New mot and it's as right as rain. Like you he had invested a fair bit of money in it to just let it go ! As it was pretty much a non runner when he bought it !

Sorry to hear about your drama - considering they're classed as vulnerable road users cyclists do some really stupid things and yet car drivers are the ones who get the blame when they get hit.

I bought my old F1 back from Admiral for a very reasonable amount and was going to go down the route of getting it repaired but in the end decided to strip it for parts before 'weighing it in'. Got a decent value agreed for the car as despite 192,000 miles it had a full and comprehensive service history. The whole process was straight forward and painless and the combination of the pay out from Admiral, sale of easily removed parts and scrap value more than paid for the replacement, higher spec and lower mileage, car and a set of nice new Michelin tyres on it too.

Look for the positives Thumbs Up

As a cyclist and motorist I see both sides of the argument which is why I'm all for cyclists having insurance to cover any eventuality . Peace and love to all road users Smile

6K is probably made up of a humungous hourly rate for the repairs. ask the insurers for the quote for works which will list what is making it up and you will probably find like Disco_mikey says its a new screen and a few panels with the rest being man hours and admin. Then buy it back and get it fixed Thumbs Up

Thanks All Bow down
I am feeling slightly at ease of the idea in getting a breakdown of the repair costs and will likely go down the route of keeping and repairing it. Keep you posted on how i goes Thumbs Up

I'm curious whether an insurance policy that covers 'uninsured drivers' like Churchill would cover this scenario?

Ps - feel for you, with all this grief. Hope you get sorted soon Thumbs Up

Your Home insurance may cover some sort of liability in this scenario ( assuming for the cyclist )? It's one of the reasons I took out insurance to cover myself and others whilst commuting on the bike. Also doubled up the life insurance as well for all the bad drivers I meet on my commute Wink
