I've owned two petrol engines that put out similar bhp. One was a 4 cylinder turbo tuned and mapped to The other was a naturally aspirated V8, incredibly under stressed. Both great to drive, but the V8 was so much more relaxing and flexible.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I really think you need to drive both before making any judgement, I'm pretty sure the 2.0 will be up to the job but there's no substitute for a proper test run.

I think the 2.0 lt will be up to the job solo but think it might be put under a lot of extra strain towing especially if you tow the 3.5 tons.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Towing limit on entry level models is 2500kg not 3500kg.

The brochure says 3500kg for the 2.0 240 SD4, Perhaps the 180 SD4 but that's not available in the UK 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

The smaller displacement engines nowadays do seem a lot more powerful than I expected them to be. My wifes VW Golf 1.4 TSi was an amazing little lump that really made the car fly. I don't know how I feel about the 2.0ltr pulling my 2500kg caravan but the power output is as good as my existing D4 (nearly). I currently have 256BHP and 500NM and the 2.0ltr is 240BHP and 500NM. The savings on fuel as most of my non towing driving is spent in busy old suburbia would be very welcome. As stated before, I think the side by side test needs to be done to settle my mind. Torque is measured on a dyno, bhp is calculated by effectively simply multiplying torque at any given engine speed, by the relevant number of rpm (I wish someone had told me that simple truth many years before I found out!).
Notice how much earlier the torque curve rises on the V6:
1000 rpm on the SD4 provides 250NM, while the same speed on the V6 provides 300NM
1500 rpm on the SD4 provides 500NM, while the same speed on the V6 provides 600NM
That's where you notice the low down pull of the V6.
The SD4 never rises above 500NM and goes into decline from 2500rpm
The V6 holds on to 600NM until 2300 rpm and doesn't dip beneath 500NM until 3500rpm. Notice the "bulge" that causes in the BHP at the same engine speeds
That's where you notice the instant and broad range of overtaking urge of the V6
Maximum bhp on the V6 comes in at 3750rpm, while it has to have a further 250rpm for the TD4 to achieve a figure that's around 15 BHP lower.
This is where you have to rev it harder to achieve BHP figures that come close to offsetting the lack of bottom end torque.
On the plus side, the TD4's torque curve is nice and flat in the mid range, which gives for a nice progressive increase in BHP as the revs rise, although it can be a bit dull as that kind of curve can make it feel a bit like an electric motor!
