Great write up, most informative ive seen so far to be fair.
My concern still remains though, I bought my D3 and D4 because I wanted something nothing else on the market could do on so many fronts.
For me, and I may be proved wrong, the D5 doesn't seem to be any better now than the XC90 or the RRS even.
That Company car tax friendly PHEV XC90 is looking more attractive by the day.
Just guess its the last time I ever go off road

The D5 is head shoulders above the XC90.
Why can't you take a D5 off road? it's better than the out going model in most areas.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I too have been to see the new Disco at the LR factory today.
First thing that struck me was the massive improvement in the quality and finish of the interior. It's absolutely stunning and easily as good, if not better than the FFRR. As others have said, space towards the rear seems smaller than the D4 but I guess this is down to the monocoque construction.
A big plus for me is the addition of isofix connections in the 3rd row and the front passenger seat.
The folding platform looks thin but is actually very sturdy. I sat on it and bounced around a lot when no one was looking and it didn't budge.
There's loads of storage in the front. Cubby/fridge compartment is now much deeper and therefore loads more usable for drinks bottles. The cup holders also slide away to reveal a very deep compartment and you've all obviously already seen the storage behind the heating control panel.
I saw 2 cars, 1 with the light head lining and 1 with dark. I was thinking of opting for the dark version but I'm put off now as it feels very enclosed. The light interior on the other hand is fantastic and I'll definitely be ordering that along with ivory seats.
Outside, the car looks fantastic. Makes the FFRR and the RRS look dated IMHO.
Overall, I was blown away and can't wait to take delivery.

Agreed
However what else can carry 7 blokes in comfort to a desert then across it?
Judging by your knee high low roof height report, NOT the D5
Never said they were tall blokes In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Good write up Andrew, thanks.
Did you notice any less headroom in the front? At a whisker under 6ft7" I have just enough headroom in a D3/4 with a sunroof.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Not sure what the difference is. I looked up and the roof was a long way off, the same as a D4.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

At least my spec doesn't have the electric seat fold. Did all cars you try have electric seat fold?

I have read 19" of wheel travel...is that true?
"we're going to need a bigger jack"It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

The guy doing the presentation at LR yesterday said that the wheel articulation was amazing and that he'd seen differences of about half a meter between wheels as the car went over obstacles, so 19" sounds about right?
