Winter rubber or studded tyres for ice?
Can anyone share experience on the best option for driving up and down steep solid ice roads with hair-pin corners? This weekend the high passes in the Lake District were solid ice and despite having General Grabber AT tyres on my Disco 3 I went the long way round. If i could have been confident that my tyres would not slide on solid ice (specifically down hill) I would have ventured over the passes. Will standard winter tyres provide this certainty, or do people generally go for studded tyres? New to the forum, had many LR vehicles but only had the D3 for 6 months (and love it)... any advice welcome.
as far a s i know studded tyres are illegal in the UK so that ones out, and sorry to say if its completely ice then no tyre can get grip on that, if its a hard winter day and there are patches of ice/slush etc then a good winter tyre will be the best option. the main thing is you just need to take care and drive to the conditions2006 D3 HSE

You can't overcome the laws of physics in a 3 tonne lump of metal.

Winter tyres are very good, I've got Continental Cross Contact Winter. But as Apache says, you might get the car moving, but stopping that mass is still a challenge! Richard

On slick ice any tyre will slide, as I found out last week in SWMBO's car with Conti winters on. Nothing too bad, just a little fish tailing on black ice when braking to turn right. Winters will be better than AT types, but there is no such thing as a tyre that is "good" on ice. The most important but is the nut behind the wheel and he/she not thinking he/she is Superman/woman and immune to the laws of physics.

Using HDC makes a huge difference.
Winter tyres will be better than summer tyres. Studded tyres would be best but only legal to use in the UK if the road is covered with snow or ice, so you'd have to carry two whole sets of wheels and tyres and change them as needed Not very practical.
Ultimately, on smooth ice, especially if the surface is melting, gravity is going to win. MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

Are 9 years that i spend a weekend running on a icy racetrack in Livigno (Italian Alps) called "ghiacciodromo".
I own the D3 since 2012 and what i can say is that a very good winter tyre is enough in any ice condition, but you need to connect your brain before starting to drive
I have seen many friends run with "all terrain" or low price winter tyre at ghiacciodromo and they were dancing too much reaching the limit at very low speed
I run on Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 18", best winter tyre on snow and ice for my D3
Here is a clip:

Awesome vid.
You throw your disco around like my wife throws mine round Tesco's carpark.
Fantastic fella, love to have a go round there, and the apres race gathering Great stuff The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Sincerely the D3 has a very good balance between traction and weight distribution, the most tricky part is to learn how to maintain the DSC (deactivated in advance by console pushbutton) down, couse it re-engage automatically if you drift sideways and have the steering wheel rotated more than 90°!
So need to keep the steering straight and turn using the accelerator
