I gave up 1995, a pack a day to nought, cold turkey. Tough but you can do it if you really want to.
Stay off the booze as that is the downfall for many, I avoided the pub for the first 3 months to help with that (in the days when you could smoke in the bar).
Health and financial benefits are well covered. I still miss it now and again, after dinner with a large whisky usually but swmbo is totally anti smoking (we got together '96 ) so that keeps me straight
Good luck.

What I did was change my drinks slightly. So Lager to Cider. Coffee to tea. So the associations were slightly different.
So that first thin in the morning coffee and a fag becomes a tea on its own.
And so on.
I also used the patches and gum as required and the NHS phone app called
"NHS Smoke Free"
It tracks your progress and also it's got a craving button that gives you helpful and useful advice - right there and then - as you need it.
All hats off to those that can/did it cold turkey but to me it doesn't matter how much cheating or assistance you need. The end result of giving up is what is important

Well done Stu.
How are you getting on with the cough?
Mine has only just started to abate eight weeks after quitting
which is a nuisance but exactly as expected.
I've got perennial rhinitus so am always a bit snuffly but SWMBO
has noticed the difference so all's good.
