Disco 3 in the snow
How good are they in snow on standard tyres ? The reason I'm asking is I work basically on top of a mountain.Good roads but when it snows it's pretty deep. On my old disco 1 I had insa turbo rangers which were pretty good in the snow.

I don't think anything is good in the snow on standard tyres. Despite all four wheels being driven on a Disco, there are still only four tiny patches of rubber in contact with the ground and if those four patches are not gripping the ground then you're doomed - 4x4 or not. I found BFG All terrains were not too bad, but nothing has come close to beating Vredestein Wintrac Extremes in the snow for me. For snow, for me, it has to be a winter tyre with that Alpine or Three Peak Snowflake symbol.D1 300Tdi - gone

I run BFG ATs for most of the year but change to winter tyres for the 'proper' winter as the difference is chalk and cheese - the BFGs can be very 'skatey' in cold/snowy conditions on Tarmac.
Once you have made the initial investment in a second set of rims then it is no more expensive as two sets of tyres take longer to wear out!Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Wintracs are brilliant & take you to a different level....
I tried mine in snow drifts in the alps (Aboriaz car park) "just fooling around"....,,simply brilliant even on standards vehicle settings.
They give you the re assurance of capability...
But whatever the tyre you have to realise any vehicles ability to stop in snow, ice, frozen slush or god forbid black ice.BREXIT - done properly.

This. I've driven my D3 in 5+ inches of snow on normal road tyres and getting going/around wasn't a problem. Stopping however was another matter entirely 2008 Discovery 3 HSE, Stornoway Grey

I think you'll find the electronics in a D3/4 will flatter the performance of any tyre. Whilst you cannot disobey the laws of physics re grip/momentum, the HDC system makes descending an icy hill feel very secure. Especially when you use the cc buttons to control the descent speed!
Stopping is undoubtedly better with winters, but that's from others experience. I have never fitted any. I drive to ski resorts and have used chains only once.
One thing I can say from experience is that chunky off road tyres are worse on hard snow and ice, than standard Scorps or Wranglers.

Five or six years ago, when we had really bad snow here, I used the D3 daily and had no problems on Goodyear Wranglers - even took it up country in the xmas hols to see how it performed (as you do). Stopping needs a bit of care though although I don't know how much better it would have been with winter tyres.

As everyone points out, its the stopping that's the problem - as I found out in December 2010 when I destroyed my Mum's hedge when my D4 decided to do an impression of a 2.7 ton torpedo
