Brake pads and service plan

Just had the pad low warning come up (23k)

Has anyone looked in to cost difference of getting done via service plan with oem parts versus one of our favourite independent chaps and AF parts?

I use AF parts and do it myself, 7 bolts - 5 of them are to get the wheel off. About 20 minutes a corner.

Do you need to reset the computer for the pad warning?

No, but you will need to replace the sensor.

I tend to change pads before the warning light, but I wouldn't have thought you would have to but I'm sure someone will be able to confirm one way or another

If the light has come on then you need to replace the sensor - at least on a D3. Doubt it will have changed on the D4.

Unless m me shaken, the service plan will do specified maintenance inspections, it does not include even cleaning the pads let alone replacing, so would be charged at virtually normal price. I have been offered a "deal" in the past as the wheels were already off!

Aechambira, Is your car new or has someone replaced before and shorted sensor? There is only one sensor front and one back, it is possible for a pad to stick causing its pair to wear quicker, if this is the one without a sensor you won't get a warning

Check to see if sensor cables are fitted, one on the front one at the rear, it is possible to remove these and twist remaining cable ends together the car then thinks they are still intact.
And or your pads have not worn down enough to trigger the sensor ? Thumbs Up

Edit must type faster Thumbs Up

Total of eight pads, only two have sensors, unless they all wear evenly the chances of the sensor being triggered is low until it's to late.

I have to admit, I check pad thickness every month or so once the pads get to 6mm and change at 3-4mm. I had a Volvo go metel to metal with no warning, destroying a good set of discs.

No. Not a new car. Bought it second hand.
Will change the pads, the sensors and make sure the connections are okay.
Amongst many other pending repair jobs.

Thank you.
