Suspected water pump leak - bah!
Hello all,
Had my water pump changed by local independent. Non LR part used in Aug '15, changed when cambelt was being done - didn't realise at the time the WP wasn't driven by the cambelt so requrested pump be changed at the time.
FAst forward to Nov/Dec '16 and I notice I need to top up the expansion tank; thought little of it as Flack had just recently done HPFP belt and I thought I'd need to top up to account for coolant lost when rear coolant pipe was removed to access HPFP Belt area.
Then I have to top up again (only small amounts to maintain level between min & max on expanstion tank) and start to think something isn't right - so went looking for a leak.
Found the following - before cleaning the area up in order to verify leak:

After a clean:

And after a couple of weeks, note it seems to be leaking from between the block and the pump mating surfaces, rather than at the nose of the pump:

Leak is most evident when the block is cold, at which point drips can be seen coming down the block from the pump body area, and the block surface behind the pump is moist. After that, it would appear to stop leaking; I've not got the bash guards one so every so often I hope underneath after a journey when the block is warm, and the leak stops.
I guess I need to replace the pump/pump gasket; grateful for thoughts on the below:
1. Torque to use on WP pump bolts?
2. Any WP brands to specifically avoid, or is LR original part the best idea I (I'll be replacing the WP pump bolts in any case)
3. Anyone seen this before? A cursory search reveals that WP leaks are considered quite rare...
Thanks all

Your email sure it's not leaking above the water pump? Possibly the water outlet assembly which is prone to separating at the join.
Otherwise, the LR pumps are not that expensive. Bodsys Brake Bible

Fairly sure - had a good look over the water outlet and don't see any oozing/evidence of leaking on/around it; no coolant visible in the V around the oil filter housing for example.
There's warranty work evidence for replacement of the expansion tank and on inspecting that as much as I can without removing it from the car, it doesn't appear to be the source of a leak either.

On looking at your picture that looks like the pump is leaking from the internal seal around the impeller shaft.

You mean the o-ring that travels the circumference of the pump body and sits inside the block when it's bolted up? If so, I agree.
EDIT: must get my terminology right!

I think flack means its leaking from the internal water pump seal, ie its knackered.
The first picture is most telling.

With the area cleaned up though, there's no leak coming from the 'front' of the pump - it appears to be emerging from the rear of the pump body and making the block surface around it moist.
Pump's coming off in any case - what a pain...

Do you know where the water pump tell tale hole is?
Just wondering if its on top and coolant is running down and appears to be from the gasket joint?

Pump is changed - easier/shorter job than I expected.
Here's the one that came off - looks like it was leaking at both ends in the end!

Un f*****g believable!
The replacement pump is leaking:

The drip appears to be coming from the front of the pump and moving toward the mating surface of the block at the rear.
Am I just downright unlucky with the replacement also being defective? Followed Land Rover Workshop instructions - 10nm on WP bolts, 25nm on pulley bolts - greased the WP gasket on install, checked belt was aligned on pulley before turning the engine over - grrrrr
EDIT: I even used new WP bolts!
EDIT 2: Some more useful info - serpentine belt on the car is a Dayco part - PQS500370, belt tensioner is a 1yr old Allmakes tensioner, replaced when the alternator failed about this time a year ago. No squeaks or otherwise untoward noises from the serpentine system...

Just to close this off.
It was a Bearmach pump that failed; it was replaced with a genuine LR pump and (touch wood) there is no further leaking down the pump/block.
