The implementation of a Land Rover hybrid that I would like is based on the Tesla Battery Electric Vehicle.
That is each axle comprising an electric motor driving the pair of wheels via a differential.
In the Land Rover the battery pack would be reduced to half the size used by Tesla and a Generator installed as the Prime Mover.
Result engine always running at most efficient speed, battery pack load caps. Ultimate Automatic Transmission.
This setup is has been used in many High Powered Railway Locomotives (English Electric Deltic). D3 HSE Diesel Auto 2005 Zambezi Silver.

I'd love a discovery hybrid, but think that the Vauxhall ampera model is quite good - the engine is used only a a generator for the electric system and hence is a little tiny thing. Up side is no range limit. 56 HSE

I would of loved a LR PHEV but sadly I got fed up of waiting and issues with quality/price/dealers in recent years so I bought a Mitsubishi Outlander
When I told my dealer I was leaving the fold they offered me a 2 year old RRS Hybrid for £64k with a 1 mile electric range or advised waiting for a RRS PHEV next year which will have approx 20 miles range and start around £80k+
The Outlander isn't a LR (no Sherlock ) but I'm getting 20 miles on battery in winter with all the heated toys switched on and over 30 miles when it's warmer for up to £1 electric - worst trip in October was 44 mpg over 135 miles - did same trip last weekend and used save button for first time to use battery sparingly and achieved 47.8 mpg - actual average since I got it is 101.2 mpg which even taking cost of electric into account is around 70 mpg equivalent 8)
I saved £8500 off new price and will get £6400 tax rebate off my company tax as well as BIK only £550 pa - true it's probably not great off road but it's cost me about £25k new with a 5 year warranty, 8 years battery and 3 years servicing - I'd like to think I will be back in a LR next time but honestly - I can't see it at the moment - unless it's a Series 2 Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

While it's probably the future direction,this technology is fairly "new" and I'll wait a few years I think.
Battery improvements and innovations seem to be moving very quickly,and it's only going to get better.
Looked at an e-Golf for swmbo last year,but the boot space was seriously compromised by the battery pack underneath....still work to be done on hybrid technology,but it's definitely going in the right direction.... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

A member on the other side traded his RRS in for a Lexus Hybrid and is getting 35 mpg - I got 30 in the SDV6 so the hybrid on it's own doesn't float my boat
The "plug in" bit is where the saving is - I spend all week on battery and use no petrol at all - weekends I exceed battery range and it sips some petrol, I pay no road tax and don't have to worry about DPF
The Jag iPace is very tempting - 0-60 4 secs and 300 mile range on electric - I may be tempted back sort of - if they can get their heads out of their and remember what customer service used to mean

I have had two Lexus RX's. The second was a hybrid. An amazing car on the road. To be honest far better than the disco (on the road) D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven
