Mind you, with the D5 being styled after a 1990's Saab estate, it won't be long until that's on the same style heap as the D4. I'm sure it'll have it's 12 months in the sun until Audi or BMW come up with the 2018 "simply must have" Wink I think I know just the people to help out here...

Was it a magpie or jackdaw that was attracted to all things new and shiny, guess LR have found their new target audience.

I prefer to use the term "Classic" to describe the D3/4 shape. It's a hairy chested, musclebound beast of a car whereas the new D5 is more pretty.

Took me many years to come to terms with the D3 as a long standing D2 owner but I can't see this being my cuppa as by the time I can afford one, I'll be scaling down anyway.

To my mind the Landrover that is a classic is the Defender. Not sure any Discovery deserves that title.

IMO, the D3/4 has already stood the test of time style wise and will continue to do so. It looks dated only in that all the current crop of SUV's look broadly similar. Again IMO, I think the D5 et al will themselves become dated looking in the not too distance future.

Simply because the D3 and to a slightly lesser degree the D4 are a classic bit of design and whilst they'll now always look "older" they'll always continue to look great.

The original RRS is a classic example of this, it looked very "modern" at launch, just as the D5 does, but it's higher level of "styling" isn't current and therefore it now looks hideously dated (IMO).

With the D3, the design concept of "form follows function" very much applied. That concept has been dropped and replaced by all LR models having the "family" look.

The point with the D3/D4 is that, yes it will date but the design will date well as there is far more utility in the design than there is purely fashion/style. The original D3 still looks cracking, and is aging well just like the defender - it is already being called a design classic by so many (not just those on here Rolling with laughter )

The D5 is growing on me but it isn't a design classic, it doesn't shift the bar, it doesn't bring anything ingenious or new at all to the table.

Looking at how I use my Discovery now, to move to a D5 I would be making sacrifices in the name of fashion/style alone - and that's just not worth 30k+ of my hard earned to refresh the main car. Anyone doing so at the moment is purely moving for fashion sake imho.

Maybe the D5.5 will actually bring some tech or power plant choices worth the effort?

Or maybe I'll change my mind before that happens... Whistle

Autocar Jerry McGovern interview:

Quote:
The company has changed its opinion about what a Discovery should be, right?

โ€œTrue. Discovery 3 was probably the most design-literate version โ€“ very product orientated. It won various design awards and had a no-nonsense, utilitarian look and feel. But it polarised opinions, especially in the US. We gave it a friendlier face and a more luxurious interior in the Discovery 4 and that sold like hot cakes.โ€

I'm just giving some gentle stick to those that decide it's not going to cause any offence by coming onto a Disco 3/4 forum and tell us how "dated" (yuck!) our cars happen to be Rolling Eyes

i think the D3/4 is past looking dated its so old its now retro cool Very Happy Mine lives in Derbyshire or Mayfair & Canary wharf and looks the dogs doodahs in all of them.

The D5 looks good and personally i think it has a pretty menacing look from the front especially with the black pack. Rear not so good but generally i like it, could landrover have been a bit more risky in its design? definitely. its more reserved than the D3 was when it was released but times are hard and landrover are playing it safe.

Yup from that angle I too like the look of the D5, however, rotate the vehicle 90 degrees anti-clockwise, so you see the rear and side, the D4 gets my vote as the D5 looks grotesque from the rear IMHO.

As said before I think the designers went on holidays when they got to the c-pillars and left to rear to some artschool apprentices. "Butt ugly"
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
