Tyres for a trailer
Ok so the tyre topic has been around the block a few times.
In the light of my little incident in the mud the other day I have decided to take the plunge and get a set of off road tyres for my baby
I have a good idea on what I will get . My question is what tyres do you get for the trailer( My trailers hubs have been matched to the D3,S) . Does one use an off road tyre or one that that gives less rolling resistance. My feeling is that you do not need an aggressive tyre but would like to know what experience has been gained out there

So my rangie is safe
I went for a Yokohama on my trailer. Not a very aggressive tread , but it has 3 ply sidewalls , which should help with any sort of sidewall damage.
What tires are you going for on the car

Well its more of a question of what we can get. The coopers are available and they will fit . I did note that on that fate filled day they struggeled to clear the mud .
Yes the Rangie and all near me should be a lot safer
Was that a collective " PHEW " from everyone ?

I remember that on that day in the Quarry the Coopers AND the BFG's both had no joy in clearing the mud, so I doubt anything would have been able to shake that snot off.
I went for the same rim and tyre on my trailer, just so that in the absolute worst case that I break 3 tyres I could ditch the trailer in the bush and still drive out in the D3.
Plus, IMHO it looks cool
On the downside, I think you can feel a bit more rolling resistance at highway speeds than the normal tyres. not sure how this translates into fuel usage though, as I TT'd my D3 before the last trip with the new trailer and got something like 12.1 anyway

The question is, do I spray the D3 Khaki, or spray the trailer Blue?

Re: Hub conversion
It wasn't really a conversion -
we bought a new set of blank hubs & brakes from Alko-trailco, plus had them weld up a new axle of the right width (the outside width of the STT's on the D3 is about 1850 as far as I remember). I also had to get some extended-length spring mounts from Conqueror to raise the suspension 25mm to clear the bigger tyres.
My mate Dave Miller of Dave Miller Motors drilled the new hubs and pressed in the wheel studs, and fitted the axle for me. He had to make custom bearing caps to fit thru the centre of the LandRover wheel. If we hade fitted the originals we would have had to make the centre hole in the wheels bigger, which wasn't very attractive to me.
I know we could have modifed the existing axle and just bought new hubs, but this way I still have all the original stuff in case I ever want to sell the trailer, and it will just bolt on with no issues.
I have tried in the past to get hub adaptors made, and it just ends up in tears, plus I am not sure how safe adaptors would be anyway.

Thanks Baben, I have the commander with the independent suspension and I am trying for the last 6 months to do the conversion, think your way will be the best way to go, Thanks
