Yours needs to be put on retention. The fee that you pay includes the cost of adding it to your new car once the new car's V5 arrives.
Unfortunately, you will probably have to pay your insurance company an admin fee for charging the ref number on their documents.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

And you need to do it now! If the old car gets registered in the new owners name you will have lost the plate!
Use the Gov.uk website to place your plate on retention now! It transfers instantly when you do it on line, your plate will be issued a retention certificate and your old D3 will be reregistered with its first original plate again...... hence after two days you will receive your new retention certificate and the log book bearing its original number plate in your name..... this will then need to be forwarded back to DVLA with the new keepers details!
You should have transferred the plate prior to sale hence the urgency that you now need to try and recover your plate before it is too late!!
Think it's business hours only? And they also randomly pick cases to do manual if I understood them correctly... However if you have any problems ring them. Unless I was just lucky the department that deals with this are really helpful..

The good thing it will only take 5 mins to complete but they can only do it during those hours...presumably someone is sitting over the process and authorises it accordingly... you will need your latest V5 document for its document reference number...
I think the same number is printed on the green slip that you will have handed to the new keeper of D3....(if you have already posted your bit off) so a quick phone call to them may help your cause!
