Running rough on start up then fine.

Last week I filled up the car at a small garage and when I started it it ran really rough. Restarted it and then fine. Drove 180 miles and fine. But since then about five times it feels like it's only running on a few cylinders then when I rev it it's fine and runs fine for the rest of the journey. I have driven it hard and it pulls ok. Serviced a couple of months ago with new fuel filter. It's almost like it does not have enough fuel at start up. Going to try and get the codes read but it's not piping up with a fault on the dash.
Any help.

If you suspect that you have filled with dirty fuel and or water contamination change your fuel filter again ASAP.

That's what I was thinking. It's just strange it only does it when I start the engine and only occasionally.

Did you fit a genuine filter?- although you say you have driven it hard, this is when an inferior/blocked filter normally shows so more like injectors.

It was the mahle filter. One I always use, just puzzled it's only at start up. Filled he tank last Saturday and now almost gone so it's had some miles. Driven 120 miles today pretty hard and ran fine. hope it's not the injectors will try and get the values read.

Mahle filters are good, but it only takes a small quantity off crap fuel to block it, I don't think it's the filter. Have you noticed any anomalies with the temp gauge?- the sensors, both oil and water work together and they may be telling the engine it needs less fuel on start than it does.

No differences on sensors. It's almost like fuel is draining away when it's parked up. I parked at a steep angle the other day and it fired but the alternator light was on and only running on a couple of cylinders. Reved it and it was fine. It's just not getting enough fuel at start up but not all the time, do it does seem I am having to crank it over a few more seconds. When it runs rough if I switch off the ignition it fires up immediately.

Sounds like low pressure fuel pump, check the shrader valve at the back top of the engine that you have got a good flow of fuel when the engine is switched on, better still check the pressure.

But if it's the low pressure pimp won't that show up when using high revs. Had that problem in a freelander and that was low pressure pump.

I'd be checking for leaks around the low pressure side of the system, sounds like air is getting in when its sat and loosing pressure.

Also check for leaks on the leak off pipes.

Not always on a D3 as once the HP pump is primed it is possible for the engine to run normally, particularly at high revs, an Iid tool can check the pressures.
Try leaving it longer with the engine on before you crank the engine.

Thanks guys will have a look at both. I did wonder if it's possible if I was losing some fuel to leaks making it difficult to start. Will try leaving it on longer. The recent temperature difference in starting may be making a difference as I don't need to leave the ignition on as long.

Ok an update on this in case anybody suffers something similar.
I put in some fuelcleanz and refulled with some more diesel.
The car is now running fine and the fuel consimption seems to have for better.
