EGR - 2008
on my disco i've replaced the EGR's (new ones) and tap them, also removed the butterfly from the air intake. start the car and no engine light all looking good. do i need to reprogram it? and if yes can please some one explain why? as far as i can understand the piston on the new egr is working (ON-OFF) and with the absence of the butterfly the engine doesn't really realize that it is taped. am i correct or talking nonsense?
thanks,

I asked similar recently and was advised that without a software patch or remap the EML would soon come on or the car could even go into limp mode without warning. I blanked mine and drove 50 miles with no issues to get a remap done.
It monitors the flow of air, and isn't happy when it doesn't see the reduction it expects. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Mines an 07. Blanked EGRs without patch & light didn't come on for 9 months. Went into limp mode a couple of times which I didn't associate with the EGRs. I have since fitted EGR patch, no light on dash & no limp mode. I would advise for the relatively small cost to add the EGR patch.

thanks a lot for the explanation. RBP it is not a small cost actually cause here (in Nairobi) there is no one doing it and to buy from UK i need to buy the diagnostic as well so it ends up to 400GBP plus transport. given that i have another diagnostic machine already does not add the maths, at least for now.

Understood. Flack sorted mine out so didn't actually need an iiD tool. Unfortunately site sponsors are thin on the ground in Nairobi .
Some haven't had issues without the patch so you might be lucky?

Hi Forum members. Its been 6 months and 5000miles since I blanked the EGR and removed the butterfly valve on my 2008 55000mile XS. Before that my EML was on all the time. The EML turned off (Faults cleared with Blackbox MS2) as soon as I started the engine after the mod. Has not come on again since then. Everything seems to run ok, power is up slightly and speeds over 100Mph on German autobahns possible. Apart from a power upgrade I cannot think of a reason to get the SW updated. Not had the limp mode show itself yet but its always in the back of my mind this might happen. What actually does the SW patch do apart from turn the EML off.

Almost same here. Had original EGRs fried replaced with brand new and had them tapped. Started the car and light was on, erased all faults with fault meter and since then never thought of it again. the only problem i can say is that on low RPM (up to 2,000) car is very reluctant to move. I've heard from various mechanics here that this will result with a blown turbo, can't really understand why but made me skeptical.
As of this week reinstalled the EGR pipes and butterfly on to see if there is any difference. i think that low RPM has been improved (could be only my imagination) but really don't have an answer.
Forum gurus any advise on this? If car is working without any fault for more than 6 months now is there a real danger?

The guru advice I got was that no software update can cause a variety of issues, some without showing fault codes.
Have you checked that your turbo actuator isn't stuck as that can cause very slow acceleration ?

haven't really checked the actuator but what am observing is that since the EGRs are re installed the response on low RPM is much much better. anyhow will have a look on the actuator as well.

Before I blanked my EGR Valve I had virtually no response in los RPM car would struggle to get moving. Blanked off and it's perfect now!

So the question is that if i tap the EGRs i don't get any engine warning light, am i safe to proceed without any software patch?
will it affect anything else? i.e. turbo?
