Hi all. In a quandary. I've had a FL2 HSE since July last year. Great motor and has done great service, but when before buying it I was really looking for a Discovery, as the load area was ideal for carrying the varied equipment I need for my business. Having a Qashqai to trade in I was hoping that the FL2 would be a compromise, and reluctantly took a decision to "roll-back" from a 2010 car to a 2007 FL2. As I've said, the car has been truly great but, I still yearn for the Discovery, but, and this is the biggest problem, I need to to a part-exchange and would be taking yet another hit as I'm getting offers of £6k even though it cost me a fiver short of £10k.
I know that very, very few people make money when changing vehicles, but that hurts, especially as I've now seen one particular locally advertised Discovery3 XS 2005 model for £7995 and I am sorely tempted. It is a very pale green (almost silver from a distance) which is a colour I would normally shy away from (the AA reckon green cars have the most accidents, sad but true) and is seriously lacking in "toys" compared to the HSE FL2.
So folks, what do you reckon? Should I go with my heart (buy it you fool!!) or with my head (are you nuts? It's green, no sat nav, no leccy seats, etc,) ...guys, it's over to you as I know you won't be in any way biased..ha ha!!

Given my experience of buying a Discovery I'd definitely spend a good amount of time reading up on all the things to check for, suspension arms, compressor, gearbox, diffs etc. I should have done more beforehand to be able to spot a bad one. The better prepared you are the less likely you will be to pick a money pit.
One thing that stood out in your post is saying it's a 2005 XS, I don't think (although I could be wrong) they existed in 2005. Just checked the Wiki and it says 2007 http://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/XS and it should have navigation.

It still sounds like it's not quite the right car for you and you may be in the same situation on 6-12 months when you chance upon exactly the right car! If the FL2's doing well, use the time to research exactly the right car and what's in budget.
I've heard the green superstition too and it really is cobblers (I've had 4, one was cr*p, three were fantastic), don't let it influence you, not even sub consciously!

I was in a similar position a few years ago.
My FL2 was my first LR and I loved it. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint), it didn't have the practicality of a Disco for the seating (elderly in-laws who can't drive, wife and two kids and a Lab) or for the loadspace (dog + luggage on holiday).
After yearning for a D4 for over a year, SWMBO capitulated and actually sent me round garages to look at them. I got my D4 2.5 years ago. I took it on a five-year HP deal - great low rate, but it's for 5 years! - and it is an expensive car to run.
But I've never looked back. I adore the car in so many ways - it's practicality, it's robustness, it's ability to handle just about anything.
I am prepared for the ongoing maintenance costs etc - I have not seen anything which would even tempt me to think of changing. I am encouraged by the huge numbers of D3s (and earlier) still in good working order - hoping that mine will join them over time.

I have a FL2 '10 and a D3 '06 . I got the D3 first -vienna green -
Sofar I never had an accident with it. My guess is very few green D3's have accidents,
as there are virtually none around..
I find the D3 more pleasant to drive. The FL2 has no feeling in the steering , and is less stable
on the straight. The FL2 is far more economical. I get 9.4L/100km with the D3 and 7.3L/100km
with the FL2. Given the opportunity I guess I would not have bought the FL2 again, but just a
second D3, although I might not be as good fortunate with repair bills as I have been sofar with the D3.
So the FL2 is the more economical option. The D3 the more refined, stable and versatile choice...

The FL2 is a fine car - in isolation. Back to back driving with one of the big LRs and the differences are noticeable. My indy uses FL2s as loan cars and getting back in to my RRS is night and day different. The ride, the handling, the cocooned feeling, the power on tap without revving etc. Even an early D3 will make the FL2 feel ordinary. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: SIT DOWN AND TALK!"
