I guess that
But what sizes are readily available?
I have found 2, 3.25 and 4.75 tonne so far. Jim

I keep 3 of the 4.75s in the car, a few places sell 6.x ones so I might add one of them too at some point The End

At least double the weight of the car on a couple of shackles, i.e 6 tonnes.

At least double the weight of the car on a couple of shackles, i.e 6 tonnes. The rating of shackles (for the tested ones) is for lifting, generally with a safety factor of three, also bear in mind that to be able to use them, they need to fit the recovery points - the 6T bow shackles are quite big....

So would that be 2 x 3.25 tonne Jim

No I keep 6 tonne shackles Jim. In reality over enthusiastic retreival can be very dangerous. TFC found that his recovery snapped so easily when he became stuck and in no way was he really stuck. Go for the best you can afford with the best tensile strength.

With TFC Recovery point breaking, what did they then attach to?
Who are reputable makers of shackles, other than 'Black Rat' as these only go upto 4.75 tonne. Jim

any shackles provided with a test cert. or traceable back to a proof test loading for that batch, will be OK
<edited to add: I got my 6.5 tonne ones from here http://www.forgetec4x4.co.uk/winchingequipment.html >

But a 4.75 ton can be a lot stronger than a 6 ton, it is only the working rating not its actual strength. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Black Rat 4.7- tonne bow shackle broke at an impressive 33.7 tonnes’ load. We then performed the same test on a likewise randomly selected 3.2-tonne Black Rat bow shackle which, in turn, broke at a no less impressive load of 27.2 tonnes.
So are 'Black Rat' out performing many other makers? How would a Black Rat 4.75 shackle compare with some 6.5 tonne ones from other sources? Jim

From the articles I read this seems to be exactly what they are doing as they do appear to break at a lot higher load than others. But I'm not an engineer so someone maybe able to inform us for definite. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
