Fl2 to D4?

Hi
I am thinking of moving from my 2010 Fl2 HSE to a similar (2010) age D4. Budget dictates a 2010 90k (or so vehicle). I have a son about to go to Uni in Plymouth so lots of trips in the next three years from sunny Essex and think the load capacity and relaxed drive will be something to enjoy.

Am I mad asking for trouble (I do about 10k miles per year (maybe 12k now)?

I have a 110 200tdi CSW which is up to the job but I cant scratch the D4 itch having owned a 200/330 & td5 disco in the past.....

Pick the best you can afford and go for it. Keep your eyes peeled on here, some great cars become available regularly, and they are ones you can trust.

I moved from a 2013 FL2, which I loved, to a 2015 D4, which I loved even more! If you need comfort, space for people and mountains of luggage, then this is the car for you Thumbs Up

I went from a FL2 to D4 last yr because this happened....

I really loved the FL2 but as we are a family of three kids, with the baby stuff in the boot and three people in the back was a bit tight so I was looking to replace anyway.. (I promise it wasn't an insurance job) Whistle

now we have the D4 XS 2012 I love it! took a little getting used to, she didn't like it at first as it was 'too big', but she soon got used to it and now throws it round like a rally car!

the 7 seats are handy as we take the in laws out sometimes, or on ling trips we put one child in the boot so everyone has more space.

At the same time I think the FL2 was fine on long trips etc, we probably would have kept it for a while if it wasn't for the above. I'll probably get another one for my work car (I currently have a FL1 with 235000 miles on so I don't thin it'll be long)

I also have a 90 200tdi which if I'm honest is just a toy to tinker with and rag at the weekends.

It drives lovely on long trips, we drove to the Alps in Feb and it was fine. if you can drive it sensibly then the fuel consumption isn't toooo bad, but you'll be lucky to get above 30mpg on a long trip and 28mpg on general use. so if you can afford the fuel, maintenance and cost if it goes wrong then go for it! it is a luxury, I doubt many people actually need a car that big and powerful, but its lovely to have all the same.

Good Luck whatever you do!

My only advice would be to ensure that whatever D4 you buy has a decent warranty with it, preferably a LR one, they are prone to going wrong and when they do it can be very, very expensive to get them fixed.

I went from a 59 plate FL2 to a 59 plate D4 - the story to SWMBO was that we could use the 7 seats (her parents can't drive) and we have a dog. The reality is I had a D4 itch (but she knew that).

I've never looked back. The FL2 was a great car, but the D4 is the best vehicle I've ever owned.

Re warranty - main dealers do a 2 year LR warranty, although you may struggle to find a 2009 plate at a main dealer as they tend to have newer vehicles (certainly around here, anyway). Warranty Direct have come through on the three occasions I've needed to use them - all wear-and-tear issues, which is reassuring.

Just don't have the MPG displayed on the screen and you'll be fine.

Hi Julian,

No don't worry, although I did take that wheel out before the recovery truck got there and sold it on, so it's still in circulation Thumbs Up

I was looking into a D4 anyway after having a courtesy car when the FL2 was in.. Love the D4 now, although I only really get to drive it at the weekend. Big Cry
