2.0SD4 or 3.0 Td6 ??

Hello again after a long hiatus away from JLR products!

We have been working and saving hard and are now in a position to get a new family car.

We looked at the Velar, lovely vehicle but expensive if you want to spec it with Air Suspension and a bit too small.

So a Disco5 it will be.

We have specced up a HSE in Corris Grey and other options bring it in just shy of £64k, this will be our Family car for a minimum of 5/6 years, and I chose the 2.0sd4 engine.

However it has just occurred to me that we could spec the 3.0d6 engine for only a couple of thousand extra.

So I though I would see if anybody on here had experience of the 2.0sd4?

I know the 3.0 fairly well, had that older version in my 61 plate XJL and have used the old RRS, new RRS a fair bit aswell as using a FFRR for a while with the 3.0, aswell as several Disco4's when my Jag broke down and when the above old shape RRS broke down!

Will I regret not having the lusty 3.0?

All opinions welcomed

Imho you would be bonkers to pay £64k and not spend an extra couple on the V6. I would put the engine upgrade ahead of any other extra as it's the one upgrade you'll notice/use/appreciate the most.

I had the 2.0 SD4 for a couple of weeks, performance wise ok ish, but lacks the low down grunt you get with the 3.0. If my eye sight was failing and was thinking of getting one I'd go for the 3.0 everyday.

3.0 end of Thumbs Up

2.0 is ok but I would always feel I had been short changed. It's fine for the DS, Evoque, F-Pace etc but not the big Disco.

I had a 2.0 HSE for a few days on loan. I thought I was awful - unrefined, lacked grunt, sounded like your average four-pot diesel and just not the right engine for this type of car. Completely ruined the car for me to be honest.

My D4 has spent most of the last month at the dealers which has resulted in me sampling various delights within the LR range.

Having spent 10 days in a 2.0 D5 followed by the same time in a 3.0 RRS there is no question that i would ALWAYS go for the larger engine.

I found that the 2.0 suited the DS which i also has for the same duration but it just did not suit the D5. A lack of power accompanied by too much revving and too many random gear changes ... not for me i'm afraid!

I don't know if its the same 3.0 engine in the RRS as the D5 but it just feels "right"!

RRS & D5 V6D engines are related, RRS has twin turbo 700Nm, D5 has single turbo 600Nm engine. RRS also available with the single turbo in some markets but I think most UK cars are twin.

You can apparently spec the RRS with the 2.0 ingenium diesel, not sure what power it would have though.

Decision now delayed because apparently Land Rover not accepting any more orders.

Rumoured there will be some changes for 2018 model. So I think it prudent to wait for the updated one, maybe they will change the bootlid?

I don't find it that ugly, but it certainly looks more balanced with a US Spec square number plate, I have seen pictures of one in a grey colour with the indent that the plate sits in coloured black along with a black roof.

I was considering doing that and putting on a Japanese sized number plate.

Really? Can you elaborate on that? Is it because they have reached production capacity? I can't believe that...

It was second hand info but from somebody that should know.

I don't want to use the phrase facelift but I was told the 2018 model will be slightly updated. The topic came up when I mentioned the length of time for delivery being the same as a Velar, or so a Salesman told me a few weeks ago.

There was mention of an instock 2017 model for fairly quick delivery though.

With all the controversy with regard the rear end styling I can only think of that being the reason for an update so soon.

The RRS has been available with the 2.0 240 SD4 for a while. Not an engine I would have in a Sport.

Updates are nothing to do with the rear end styling, it's just natural model year improvements and hopefully software glitches fixed. If LR do intend to titivate the rear it won't be until a full blown facelift.

Do you think they would actually close the order book till 2018 for something as mundane as software updates?

Sounds a bit extreme.

I will be hearing back next week if they have any 2017 models available that are already built and will see what the discounts are like.

DriverheDeal offers just over £2k on a HSE with options.

The Salesman at the Dealer did say that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto or mirrorlink might be in the offing, maybe that is part of it?
