Owned OEM, Frontrunner & now on my 2nd Prospeed. Awesome bit of kit & don't notice it's there.
OEM flimsy & noisy, 75kg capacity, around -5mpg
Frontrunner nice flat load bed, noisy, rated 300kg (newer version), around -3mpg
(Also Patriot & Big Country, both a similar style with slats running along the length).
There's also the new Cargo Bear option available from site sponsor Leeds (Brendan) @ 4x4 Overlander.

Where did you get your orange straps from Jester? Oh, and what's the green box on your rack

Now I'm back to square one after originally thinking the Prospeed may not be practical enough.

It's a hard choice between the FR Slimline II or Prospeed for me. I'll probably have to see them both in the flesh before finally making my mind up.

Why don't you think the Prospeed rack is practical enough Discovery-Dave?

Dave, mainly depends on what you want to carry I suppose, if RT & lots of gubbins then a flat deck could be more use as you do get a slightly bigger load deck, I however feel the Prospeed more than suits my needs.

I've seen and compared the FR rack to my Hannibal rack. What I like about the Hannibal is that it is totally flat which I think makes it more versatile. As for noise, I hardly notice it on the car and i've done 190,000 miles with it on!

No way would 300kg be possible - have you seen how small and how few machine screws are used to hold it all to the roof????

Shocked

That's their claim Robbie, I was surprised as the old one was 150kg. Not sure what the recommended limit is from LR (think that's to do with OEM kit limits though).
I do think that Patriot, Hannibal & Big Country are better options for a flat bed as they seem sturdier, also all 3 have load bed slats running fore to aft so should be quieter as well.
Prospeed is 250kg if I recall correctly

The LR limit is 75kg, including the rack itself (although many of us have exceeded that on expeditions). The failure mode is the M4 machine screws shearing under a lateral load, sending your cargo, rack and roof-rails on their merry way.

It's a point of fascination for me to see owners use heavy duty straps and cargo rings, whilst oblivious to the fact that the LR mounting rails are little more than ornamental trim.

Think we're all 'guilty' of an overload sometimes. Best one I've seen that made me wince was a 2.5 awning mounted onto 2 brackets into the short rails

What about the Direct 4x4 Expedition racks? They're just under £400 for the top one, has anyone tried them?
