My own GAP provider allows for 1 year's deferral at the start of the policy, giving me 5 year's cover, for the price of 4. Check that your chosen GAP provider will allow you to transfer any unused part of the policy to a new car (or allow a pro-rata refund) should you change your car before the end of the term.
When I took the policy out they were even able to extend to a 5 year GAP policy, with return to current replacement value, with a 1 year deferral on top of that (total 6 years of cover). They will allow transfer to a new car and will even refund the balance of a policy, subject to a £20 charge. Unfortunately, there's a £50,000 maximum claim limit, but you can't have everything.
Interestingly, NFU who insure the car, provide new for old cover for the first 2 years (rather than the normal 1 year) 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)
