Is mine running ok?

Car had been started and driven for about 5 to 10 minutes or so to go shopping. When I came back out started her up while waiting for swmbo to come out and was stood next to car. Heard the whoosh of the fbh powering up and got the smell coming from the car. Only seemed to run for a few minutes though and when I opened the bonnet the fbh all felt cold. Temp display on dash said 8 degrees. Am I worrying over nothing or is it not working correctly?

Bit here that explains a bit about it all, it might have started ok on auto depending on the external temp <15c but if you switch the engine off it will go off as well as its all linked and automatic (unless you have a manual remote, timed climate, etc.), if the temp of the coolant is warmer it will stop the FBH coming on as well, have a good read here.

There’s loads about the FBH on the forum

I did keep the engine running as then drove home. Opened the bonnet whilst still in the car park at the shops.

I will add that there has been no cloud of smoke at all so don't think it is sooted up. I think it may have just got a bit enthusiastic then realised it wasnt needed. Car seems to warm up ok.

Think its best to try it again from the beginning, if all the conditions are right one morning or whenever, start the car up and leave it running, if its cold enough then after a few minutes the FBH should start automatically, they don’t all belch smoke maybe just a wee bit of a smell on start up, normally run pretty efficiently, (mine does anyway in fact you’d hardly know it was running), after a few minutes you could see if theres any exhaust heat or slight amount of steam (just like a a car exhaust on a cold morning)coming out of the FBH exhaust behind and towards the front of the N/S/F wheel, or lift the bonnet and check the FBH exhaust, it may be hot if its running so be careful you don’t burn yourself, it also turns on a circulation pump in the coolant system to help warm the engine quicker and in turn the cabin, it all takes about 15 to 20 minutes then the FBH will turn off, obviously the engine and coolant is now warm and you may not hear the FBH run if you switch off and leave the car for a bit until it all cools right down again, hope this helps, do read the link and posts for more info.

These units or similar variants are used on trucks, camper vans, etc and are very reliable and efficient when set up properly.
Cheers

Its been really cold up here this week, fitted a Bodsy remote FBH kit on Monday and it works a treat, -2c on Monday morning, 20 minutes and the car was nice and warm, what a great piece of kit, then there’s the heated seats, brilliant.

Bodsy, supplied mine and its easy to fit, few alterations to the car CCF and its sorted, not exactly cheap but really good, I like it it helps me a lot. Reading another post you seem to be pretty clued up on CH systems so should be a doddle for you to install.

The oval timers are a simple mod, but the car has to be asleep for them to work and as soon as you unlock the car the fbh drops out, so works well if you need the car at the same time everyday but no good for an adhoc pop down the shops.

Thanks for the replies guys. Will give it another go when it is a lot colder and see how it goes. The car doesnt get used very often so may just go out and fire her up at some point and see what happens. Hopefully will be frosty so can check the heated windscreen at the same time. Thumbs Up

hi mate and many thks, that indeed is a very good point Bow down

been reading through the links of the remotes etc, think for me , it would be nice to have the facility of just pressing a remote from indoors to turn the fbh on before i get in the landy , not having it on a daily timer

or seen where u can use a mobile , only got a blackberry so not sure if it only works with a smartphone etc

got some more reading to do, just got to get my head round the different systems that are available Whistle

Quick update. Just been out and fired the car up as is now cold enough. Fbh fired up and within 5 minutes there was hot air blowing out of the exhaust underneath. My car is a 2006 but the fbh has a date stamp on it of 2009 so guessing has been replaced at some point. Is very quiet and doesnt vibrate at all when running. I'm assuming that is a good thing?
