Morning boys & girls.
I didn’t have any paperwork with my D3 (05) to tell me the belts had been done but having 150K on the clock I decided to have at least the front one done just for peace of mind even though common sense tells me that it would have let go before now if it hadn’t been done.
I took it to a local garage where I’ve known the owner for many yrs & is a Landie man.
10 miles after leaving the garage (next day) I lost all coolant & it became apparent the auxiliary belt pulley was off, he came out and recovered it back to the garage Friday night.
I know it’s a guessing game but what is anyone’s guess what’s not been done?
I’m thinking auxiliary pulley bolts weren’t torqued down or even tightened.
I’m thinking one of the young lads have dabbled somewhere along the way.
Any thoughts appreciated
Keith

Had exactly the same on my old oil burner, and that service was done at a main dealer. Came back with the viscous fan spanner rattling round the engine bay too.

Looks like the water pump bolts snapped or at least one did & that let go off the belt.
I can’t see why he would have taken the water pump off to do the timing belt so going to have to put it down “as one of those things”....
Back up & running now so we will see how long for 😀
Thanks for all input

As DM says.
They removed a water pump bolt by mistake while taking off the front cover and then didn't replace it or failed to tighten it. Stu

Isn't workshop 101, to place all bolts and nuts etc into a bowl or similar, and
Then at the end of the job you can tell if you have missed something?
No wonder a lot of us refuse to pay people to do work on our discos when professional mechanics can forget things and damage our cars.

So you've never had any leftovers after doing a job, that would be a first for me It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

You can’t beat a few bolts left over at the end of a job to induce a head scratching moment. We’ve al been there, your mechanic friend has made a mistake. He will have realised when he got it back to the shop what’s happened.

A bit off topic but a friend of mine in the early 70’s did an oil change on his minivan and found ball bearings amongst oil (I expect from a gearbox bearing) and at a loss he just tipped them back in with the fresh oil.
