Having watched helplessly in my rear view mirror as my double axel trailer rolled down a busy road for about 500 yards before stopping after a hitch broke off the car, I’d make sure all your hitch parts are genuine and acceptable to local laws.

Don't really want to go into the legalities in this post. If I believed all the horror stories about what is and isn't legal I'd have sold the sankey long ago. As far as I am concerned if I were involved in an accident the authorities would need to be able to prove categorically that the hitch was the root cause. The only people likely to pull me up on it are a bored traffic copper or a very pedantic vosa officer and I'm willing to take my chances with both.
This post is intended solely for requesting constructive advice on how I might successfully and safely secure my sankey to the back of my D3 without it costing an absolute fortune.
All comments so far much appreciated and taken on board. Thanks all.Cogito ergo sum!

No problem, I just wanted to make you aware, as insurance companies are always looking for an excuse not to pay out in the event of an accident, but as you say, you are willing to take your chances.

Funny you should mention that. I'm in a Disco because my Defender was written off the day after I'd sold it and the day before the guy was coming to collect. Without argument AXA my insurers paid out the amount I'd sold it for in spite of it having a winch, snorkel, led lights everywhere, a nato hitch, a two inch lift, non standard seats and additional seating in rear. Apparently they don't consider any of those significant enough mods to affect the policy!Cogito ergo sum!

Are you looking to get the hitch level up quite high to keep the sankey level? If so, check out the mitch hitch (by Mitchell Bros.) from Australia. You may be lucky and find one cheap on ebay as they've been around for while.2011 D4 SDV6 HSE

Ordered above as per Iguana’s suggestion. Will get pictures done when it’s all setup.
And breathe......now I can go back to figuring out why my heated seats aren’t working!
Thanks for all the help and advice.Cogito ergo sum!
