Hi Galwaygreen we have not done this one as yet but its on the list ,it is my understanding from friends who have been to St Petersberg that the cruise ship get a blanket visa and you can only go ashore as apart of a ships tour
hope this helps

I have done it and it was a great trip, depending on what cruise line you are using as to your visa. When we went we did not use the cruise ship's trip ashore, instead my wife found a private company through the internet, they did all our visa requirements and the service was excellent.
We had a car all to ourselves with a tour guide and driver all day. You also do not need to queue up as they have special passes to go straight in on any visits. They picked us up at 7am from the ship and dropped us back at the ship around 7pm.
We did the City tour and then both of the Palaces, It was one of the best trips we had been on.

investigate P & O website a little further...as mentioned if you go on ship organised trips ashore they have a blanket cover visa...you can go your own way but a visa is a must....not cheap...the visit Russia site suggests £175 per person per visit and you have to go to London..Edinburgh or Manchester to do the bara metric bit....there are companies that also do...think we will stick with P & O....JUST WHAT COULD GO WRONG.

Hi we have cruised the Baltic including St Petersburg ,the cruise line looks after the visa we’ll P&O did and very enjoyable it was.
If you go the route I went the organisers get your visa's sorted for you, all you have to do is turn up. We went in July and the weather was good.
If you want the details of the travel company we used I can dig them out.
We had a personal tour guide and driver in a Chrysler Grand Voyager all day with just my wife and me, it was well organised and could not fault it.

Procuring a Russian visa on your own is a real hassle. You need an invitation letter.
The cruiseline can facilitate a day visa if you book 1 of their shore excursions in St Petersburg. We did it with Princess. It was seamless; the Russians have a consular post right at the port that Princess used to get our visas.
Other travelers onboard booked day trips with a 3rd party and the 3rd party was able to direct them on the visa.
