Buying a 2010 model
Hi All
Went to see a used D4 2010 model at weekend with FSH (inc cam belt change) and 140,000 on clock.
Took it out for a drive on dual carriageway and noticed a not too healthy noise from front after lifting foot off accelerator and subsequently coasting. Didn't do it under normal driving conditions, only when coasting. Not a high pitched noise, more mid range, but certainly didn't sound like it should be there.
The sales guy said it sounded like a front bearing, which they would investigate and fix but loathe to put a deposit down until I have more of an idea of what this may be an indication of.
Used to own a D3 (for which previous membership of this forum was indispensable) so know how these things can be expensive.
Thanks in advance

front diff maybe? Obviously shouldn't make that noise!
If you're serious about the vehicle, maybe worth getting it checked over by a specialist prior to purchase to ensure no hidden issues.

A wheel bearing wouldn't wait for you to lift off before making noise, possibly diff noise.
Don't rush your purchase, there are plenty out there.Stu
2016 D4 Landmark current
2022 Defender D300 SE Gone

D4 2016 hse lux montalcino red - Gone

If the car is otherwise ideal and they are confident they are going to sort it, see if they will take a deposit so low you can afford to lose it if you're not happy with what they achieve..

Thanks for replies - I have arranged an independent inspection including road test tomorrow from 'The automotive inspector Ltd' for £100 - have told the garage that I won't put deposit down until report has been done. Will let you know what the result is - would rather lose £100 than buy a heap of trouble!

Good news - only fault is, as suspected, the wheel bearing which the trader will fix prior to collection.
Offside rear brake disc will need within 10-15K miles, but that's acceptable given the age of the car, missing a parcel shelf cover thingy but given that the border terrier's cage will be in the back, not an issue. Just need some mats... see that Rimmer Bros have them for £100, but on ebay they are £25...
Thoroughly recommend the Automotive Inspector Ltd - huge comprehensive report which checked everything with a valuation that is more than I am paying for.

I got a 4-YO MY 10 in 2014 - love it and haven't looked back.
Front wheel bearings on mine went recently at 95k - Warranty Direct paid for the new ones. Might be worth a look.
