How is the middle tube put and held in place while it is tightened up? How is it extracted from the chassis ? Is there anything connected to the tube inside the chassis?
it's not a simply tube ... female threaded tube at one end and male threaded section at other end.
not done it myself but guessing the hole at one side accepts the tube and big washer covers the big hole.
shove it in, put nut on other end and it can't then fall into the chassis.
there is no reason a suitable HT bolt and a section of tube wouldn't be as good but PROVING that is another thing.
Mine are just tubes, slip on bolt and fit through keyhole shape hole in outer side of chassis then fed through inner chassis hole.L633 Defender

The late D3 and D4 have a key hole and it is tube with nut bolt and washers. I have an 09 D3 and the Witter tow bar I got was fitted to a D4.

Thanks Pete, I had hoped to get some from Beanie but he didn't reply to my emails so bought a Genuine Land Rover complete set.
Just out of interest, are yours just made up ones or are they for Witter tow bars? as they look different than the Genuine ones that I got.
Thanks Matt

Apologies for resurrecting this thread but mine is an 05 model and there doesn't seem to be a keyway to remove these centre bushes. I have a stripped thread and need to replace these so how is this possible?LR3 MY05 TDV6 2.7 HSE - 130k

I will answer my own question noting that I feel rather silly for asking in the first place. The take away here is perseverance wins the day!
The keyway is there, how could it not be...you merely have to dig a little further north on the outside of the chassis underneath the harmonic damper mount. It is not visually obvious without such investigation.LR3 MY05 TDV6 2.7 HSE - 130k
