Online car tax
So you can tax your car online and the money gets taken immediately. You also get a 16 digit reference number confirmation.
So then I try and put a private registration onto vehicle and get a "can't be done" message so ring them up.
Oh, goes they - you've only recently taxed it so it takes 5 days for our systems to catch up.
But you can see I've taxed it and my retention certificate and V5C details all match and confirmed but you can't transfer the number over?
Was told I can apply by post (up to ten days ) - er, but I want to transfer number today so can insure vehicle with new number and not have to pay £50 document change fee in five days time.
Told to check online tax system daily to see when it goes live - so that means it shows as untaxed so what happens if you get pulled and "computer says no" (as it will) when checked?
Ah well, I'll insure it today and sod's law dictates it will go 'live' just after and I'll have to pay £50 for new documents........

So have I historically. Issue seems to be if you want to transfer on same day as you tax it
I had same issue... Took about 2 weeks to get it done. Luckily my insurance don't charge for the reg no change..

Yeah I re-read your message. My bad.
I would think it is fine to insure the car on the old reg and then advise them of the change of reg, which should be zero cost.
What happened with me last week is that the previous keeper and I both had private reg numbers. So rather than them transferring to the original and then me to mine, I did it online from theirs to mine. I then picked the car up and was unable to tax it (so the reverse of your problem) until the new V5 arrived at the previous owner - so I drove it for two days on their tax still and dated the transfer of the sale two days later than actual.
Not technically correct but there were no issues.
As soon as the V5 with my reg arrived we transferred and I taxed there and then, destroying that V5 and the new correct one in my name with my reg arrived this week.
The sub text to all this is that the online system works brilliantly, until it doesn't in which case you are fire-trucked unless other parties in the matter are accommodating and understanding.
I am reminded of another private reg swapping incident where I was attempting to offload a vehicle to a webuyanycar type dealer but because I had swapped the private reg off HPI data was wrong and therefore they couldn't buy it. Had to ebay it and, you know, deal with "members of public" :shudder:D3 07 SE - still going strong

Did mine when I brought the D3, tried online got the can't do it message,so phoned them and was told because there was a break in the road fund licence for one or both of the vehicles within the last five years I would have to do it by post.
I asked what she meant and as both my vehicle were brought via dealer/trader then there would have been a period of it sat there untaxed oh and you need to be aware we may need to inspect both vehicles. I sent all paperwork off and had it back in less than five days all transferred, sometimes their systems and rules just don't make sense

Cant you just insure it on the new private reg? if you have an accident before the proepr transfer date its still the same car and no court in the lnd will let them use it as an excuse.
