Cold start..

Do all D3 sound a bit rough when sat over night on first start? When I first start mine I’ve felt for a while that it’s quite rumbly and makes like a dull knocking from within, once warm it no longer sounds like this at all and is very smooth.

I’m seriously bad with Diesel engines, so this is probably very normal, but I can’t help being in tune with all the little noises it makes. It’s taken me quite a while to get used to the way this car sounds!

Not normal. Could point to duff glowplugs.

Hmm first start when it was say 1 degree or something, it would cough a bit.

But it started fine today, just sounds ever so slightly rumbly and just a faint deep knock. Not sure how long it’s done it but it’s for a while. It hasn’t really had me worrying as I imagine if something was seriously wrong, it would develop very quickly. But just one of those things that niggles me on the first start.

I will attempt to get one first thing tomorrow after it’s sat over night.

Here’s a short video, apologies for a few bits of wind noise, it was seriously windy this morning. If you listen carefully, you can hear a slight dull knock, especially around 6/7 seconds and towards the end. I had to listen carefully, it isn’t as noticeable in the video.

Did anyone have any feedback on this? Or is this just normal? I re listened to the video and if I listen carefully I can certainly hear what I’m trying to describe.

I have the same dull knock when cold but then fine when warm. 217000 Kms. No rough running though, thats probably a separate issue.

What fuel do you run it on ,cheap stuff makes mine more noisy same in the 90 and the focus runs like a bag off spanners on supermarket fuels

I run BP ultimate at the moment, seems to run better on this. It had a replacement HPFP late last year, I wonder if it’s all something to do with this, cheap pump or something, was fitted under warranty.

I definitely have bad glow plugs, so could be down to that.

It goes away after a short drive, and isn’t there when revved, just on idle, I’m very in tune with engine noises, sometimes a bit too much.

Does sound like it may well be glow plug related if the noise does just happen first thing when its cold. The slight knocking may be caused by the cold cylinders (worse depending on how many plugs have failed).
