DG, mines a standard SE V6D on the 5 split spoke style 5021. Decent sidewall, so not so easy to kerb, a number of guys at work running the larger wheels have managed to kerb them !

Had a good read of this. I have a D4 and recently that went in to the main dealers over 3 days so that they could make some money to pay for their nice new showroom. They gave me a D5 diesel HSE. So I was interested in how much my initial experiences differed from yours.
The short answer was very little. The ride characteristics and performance are exactly as you describe. I remember commenting to the wife that the bumps were more pronounced in it.
Can I add anything? My short affair with this car coincided with the day of the week that I do a grandkid school run, so had to fit three kid seats in the middle and one in the back. The motorised seats in the back are, for many people I would guess a gimmick. But if you do regularly have them up and down and need to put kids seats in, it's a boon. I can't comment on accessibility to the rearmost seats, because with all the middle section taken up, it's a case of firing a 7 year old through the back door for access there.
I suppose the perennial question is, would you upgrade? Looks wise, the outside is (like many have said) perhaps an acquired taste. But let's not forget that the D3 on launch was likened to a London taxi cab. Inside, there's a definite improvement. To the extent that when I got back into my D4, initially it felt like I was sitting in a D2! However, once driving, the differences are pretty small and sort of cancel themselves out. To the extent that you end up with the feeling that the whole D5 upgrade is mostly cosmetic. So, to answer the question, so that I can stop drivelling on and go and put the kettle on. Yes, I would upgrade to a D5, finances allowing and when it was time to change anyway. Just don't expect a seismic change in all areas if you do though. Incidentally the car did get admiring looks and comments from friends, acquaintances and random people when refuelling. So if that is important...

Well I have had my D5 for 10 months and have clocked up 30,000klm driving in both cold (below zero) and hot conditions. 46C on a trip out through Queensland towing a camper trailer and the car has not missed a beat.
I miss my D3 as it was well kitted out but I seemed to always have my hand in my pocket and I was getting reluctant to take it off road. Spent about $20k on it with accessories and repairs and when the opportunity came to upgrade could not help myself and bought the D5 TDV6. The D5 is much more car like to drive and off course has all the mod cons the D3 did not. Have had the D5 on the beach a few times and it feels much more fleet footed but yet to get it off road like the D3 to really test it out.
Surprised at the number of people that comment on what a lovely looking vehicle it is, yes even from the rear.
I love the fact that when the phone beeps for a message now I don't go straight to the dash looking for faults.Take the road less traveled. Met a chap today who has a Velar. He said that he'd had RRSs in the past and loved them. Then went to Mercs for a while. Came back to LR for the Velar. Wants rid of it as it's been in 4 times in quick succession with InControl problems. He also thinks the build quality is sub-par. Here we go, thought I, rants about LR incoming.
Then he said that he'd had a D5 for a few days during the Velar's last dealership stay. Loved the D5 and would happily get shot of the Velar and replace with the D5! "Lovely" and "brilliant" were adjectives used. My smack was duly gobbed... Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Out of the frying pan into the fire springs to mind
The D5 uses the same software and suffers the same gremlins. Plus if it’s the 3.0, regular service warnings are par for the course. I wouldn’t touch another 3.0 D5 with a barge pole.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Yeah a few Velar owners have went through ownership unscathed. I wasn’t so lucky.
Two new headlights
A rear light
A shock absorber
Numerous software bugs
EGR issues
Passenger door out of alignment
16 months of ownership, that’s a trip to the dealers every month
