So, for me, it’s all on the new Deafener. Will they reinstate the “command” driving position, and make a regular LR? Who knows? LR are alive because they found mass market appeal. They’re in danger because they are now mass market, and there are better cars in the market than LR ... particularly if you’re not persuaded by the off-road gubbins.

This, in a nutshell, particularly the last sentence.

IMO, much of the popularity of the D3/4 was due to it's rugged "Tonka toy" styling. It didn't matter if the driver was never likely to venture properly off road. In the same way that many purchasers of diving watches won't ever actually go diving at all, let alone to a depth of 300m.

Now the Discovery doesn't look any "harder" than the numerous other 7 seat SUV's on the market. Neither is it as practical as the D3/4 was to those who needed a rectangular box for ease of transporting stuff.

Not sure why people think that the D5 has lost the 'command' driving position of the D4 ...you sit just as high and the view over the road and traffic is identical.

Yup, easy enough to see the where the corners are. Also in the Velar you can see the edge but in the Disco Sport I could see nowt.

Command driving position

That is the issue now as my wife finds anything too low after the Disco 3. With the XC 90 the feeling is definitively different as you feel you are sitting in the car and not on it Laughing Laughing

Never driven anything that gives you the feeling that the Disco 3 gives you in that respect (but I have not driven the Disco 5 so cannot comment on that)
It takes all sorts (to make a world).

D3 HSE LHD gone but not forgotten

That’s good to hear as the vision from an Evoque is shocking. The D5 doesn’t have stadium seating though does it?

I’m not sure what the copywriter based that pearl of wisdom on, but to have a proper command driving position you need a high seat, a bonnet that’s low in relation to the seat and a bonnet that you have a hope of seeing the corners of. The ‘5 scores 1 out of 3 on that score.

IMO, "command" driving position is not a matter of eye-line level (or whatever you might call that).

It is (or was) the LR advantage of "sitting up" in the driver's seat, with good sight lines over the bonnet (hood for our American colleagues) and a sense that the critical vehicle controls (wheel, gears, breaks, throttle) were readily at hand or foot.

My daily drive is a MY16 SDV8 RRS2 Auto. It's very good. I love it. It does not have the same "command" position as my 110 or my D3.

SAME SAME in Discovery Sport brochure, just MARKETING words really, no way is it the same in the Sport, not even as good as the Freelander was, you also have to be a midget to take advantage of the highest seat settings as it has a lower roofline.
COMMAND DRIVING POSITION
Land Rover’s Command Driving Position provides the driver with an elevated view of the
road ahead and its surroundings, ensuring you’re always more aware of conditions.
So you can drive accordingly.

MARKETING words like this and Ambient interior lighting are used to justify a higher premium price for what are basic 4x4 characteristics, which to my amazement people are prepared to pay over the odds for, then quote and boast to justify their excessive spend!

With the recent job cuts at Landrover in the news (Declining UK sales), perhaps it could be a sign of sanity returning to the market, perhaps the reasons cited on this site for a long time about Landrover losing site of its roots and its core market (UK) are the underlying factors Thumbs Up

If it were solely down to the “height of a driver’s eye”, every car, or van, with a high driver’s seat could be said to have a “command driving position”, so the term becomes completely meaningless; we might just as well all buy Ford Transits Rolling Eyes
