[Wanted] Small cheap car

Hey all,

I often see stuff like this pop on here so thought that I may aswell ask as you never know because ebay etc is a minefield.

I find myself quite a way from home for 3 months and in need of a car whilst mine is fixed. Who knows, it may even make a commute car going forwards.

I looked at hiring and found that I might get a 'preloved' model for the same money.

Needs: Less than £1K, economical, petrol, MOT and free from rot Thumbs Up

Nice to haves: 5 door, auto, red or blue Laughing

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

Pug 207 or Fiat Grand Punto .

A bag of sand should just about get you in a 10/11 year old one.

I picked up a 59 plate Punto not long back for £1600 for one of my sons.

My daughter will be selling her Clio 1.6 auto (bought off member on here) as she cannot afford to run it when her baby comes along.

Haven't got all the details but think it's a 98/T, only has about 29k mileage and is super clean both inside and out, it really is a tidy motor for age. Think it was fresh MOT when she bought it so guessing it has about 5/6 months left?

Only issues I know of is the fuel flap is off the car and in the boot. Looks like it has been broken off previously and fibre-glass/resin'd back on but it was flapping about so daughter removed it ( Rolling Eyes ). It has a locking cap on it.

And its green Mr. Green

I've sealed the electric sunroof shut as footwells were getting wet. Forum searches indicated it was drain tubes or heater matrix overflow/drain backed up. Sunroof tubes is headlining out job (she doesn't live with/near me so I never got round to doing it as quite a big job) and I cleared the heater matrix pipe that was packed solid with silt. Appears to be OK daughter says (sunroof isolated by taking fuse out so can be put back working quite easily).

A warning light on dash comes on now and again and gearbox locks out in third not fourth when that happens. Changed a gearbox switch and that appeared to fix it but still happens now and again. Resets whenever ignition is off. Never bothered daughter as a city car as happens at higher speeds.

Offer over £600 to take into account the above would get it I expect, I can get pics/details if required.

Well thanks v much. I need a full runner though I’m afraid. Having found its original eBay listing (I remember when you bought it) I do REALLY like that car and shouldn’t think it will take much fettling back to greatness - I just don’t have the time or tools to do it and don’t want it to be problematic up and down the length of the A1. Thanks again for going out of your way to make such a comprehensive description to avoid potential disappointment 👍

if you don't mind me asking, why are you not considering diesels? At the budget you are proposing, potential deisel depreciation is irrelevant and it would likely be more economical?

Mikey, as I already run two diesels as both my car and the family car 1 in the VW group, and 1 LR. I find them quite problematic overall I guess, but maybe short-sighted.

I have had nothing but good experiences with all the petrol cars I have had, they seem to be easier to easier to fix at home, less diagnostic faffing.

I should consider diesels too perhaps though Thumbs Up

Not sure how much of a rush you are in but in a few weeks hopefully my brother's 1.6 Auto petrol 56 plate metallic red mk2 Focus will be available. No rot, full runner, used every day, regularly serviced and well maintained. Done about 60k from memory. It was owned by a vicar, then my mom before being passed onto my brother two years ago.

I was going to clean it up and advertise for £1250. It's been used as the kids school bus so just needs a damn good clean up. If it saved me the bother of valeting it £1000 would secure it. Needs MOT in September I think.
