Please let me know your thoughts
Would you let the ongoing crank failure issue put you from buying a second hand discovery 4

Not really, you could buy any vehicle and suffer a failure
You just need to cross everything and enjoy it

if it comes with a LR warranty and fails in that period you've got half a chance of LR covering the £16 grand for a new engine,,outside of that it appears pot luck.

I wouldn’t have a problem in buying another.
All the time that the likes of Warranty Direct still cover crank failure within their new policies, it’s fair to assume that the incidence of failure is a very great deal less than the impression given by reading this Forum.
As with any car of the cost and complexity of a D4, major repairs are usually going to be costly, so budget for a decent (non Land Rover) warranty in your calculations. It’s as good a reason as any to stay out of the dealer network and budget for 3 year’s WD cover with the money saved.
While good late D4’s remain sought after (there being no credible replacement) on the plus side, a combination of the media making a nice living out of anti-diesel hysteria and the exaggerated reporting of crank failures on here, it should help to suppress asking prices 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

2023 to date: FL2 as a second car

Having suffered a crank failure then yes I wouldn't buy another without robust service and warranty backup.

Personally I think a crank snapping is unacceptable in any vehicle from any manufacturer or year, what happened to good old engine seizing or is that too retro these days lol.

I would say 100k 20 plus years ago, nowadays 200k shouldnt be out of the ordinary otherwise every D3 is scrap value and every D4 isnt far behind going on mileage alone.

As opposed to the unlimited mileage that LR offer?
In all of the hype and the rumours around this, no one has ever been able to provide a genuine figure for failure rates on this engine, so it really is impossible to make an informed judgement.
However, if the likes of WD don’t exclude it, then that would tend to indicate that the chances of failure are probably low. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

2009MY Toyota Land Cruiser (Lc4) - Black

If you have access to a figure such as “Land Rover state that for every 1,000 vehicles, 5 will fail in any 12 month period”**, then please share it It’s the sort of data that we really need.
Until then, we’re just guessing
** This is a made up example, I don’t want to be responsible for another “I read somewhere that...” comment 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
