Looks like my 05 has the steering wheel issue and airbag cover problem. Took it in for the 35k service and pointed out the issues, they said they would replace it but showed me several other LR3s with the same issue. I had not seen this post until tonight.
Should I ask them to wait until a permanent fix is found? I will run out warranty is 5 months at my mileage rate. '05 LR3 (Disco III) Trail, 5 Passenger V8 petrol, LHD, ARB Bull Bar, Warn XD9000 Winch

AFAIR all steering wheels are leather on the Discovery 3. Did you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room in my D3 for 7,
Climb in here Joe we'll soon be flying,
I can go just as fast with 7.

Hi,
I had the airbag cover replaced last service, curved up from the heat of 2 years in Alice Springs. The steering wheel has gone, same thing. Rough patch at 10 past and also at 10. I have it targeted for my service on teh 25th of this month. Reported it when I booked the car in and did not even get a question. TDV6

Ive had one airbag cover replaced and its replacement is going the same way only a couple of months on .
I've also had the cowling which encloses the windscreen wipers replaced (well its sitting in my shed) due to it deteriorating. I dont think the D3 likes the sun very much as I can now see what appears to be a bubble starting to appear next to the passengers side airbag on the dash.

for those here in OZ, if you are hoping for a quick fix of a replacement steering wheel, I am told it is 3 weeks delay, as they have to order it in from the UK.
the stealer had no problem of replacement under warranty, just that they do not carry replacement here in OZ.
So if you are waiting for a service just call in an show them, and they call you back when it arrives to the replacement and service at the same time.

The rough patch has just appeared on mine, at the 8 o'clock position.

They have ordered a new steering wheel for my D3 without question. Roughing up from 11 to 1 o'clock. It must be a real problem in the Oz sun. I once had a Falcon (company car) and this problem occurred after about year (well within the warranty period) and they refused to replace it. Ford's excuse, caused by sun exposure and not manufacturing fault.
Over the years, the BEST warranty responses I've ever had are with the current D3, it could be the dealer,

Rough patch at 10 o'clock position on mine, but then I looked and it's rough at this position on all 3 cars I own. Then noticed scratches abound wherever SWMBO puts her ring finger and attendent hand, which also gets regularly covered in odd feminine hand lotions which probably don't work so well on leather. Hmmm. Maybe I ought to ask for the wedding ring back (you know, "It's for good occupational health reasons, dear."), but I suspect that'll cause severe warranty problems of a different kind (starting with my financial, mental and physical health). It doesn't do it on other cars of moine. D3 is at 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock so not caused by a ring (SWMBOs or mine)

I had a base model loaner D3 from the dealer the other week that definitely had a plastic wheel....only one I´ve seen so maybe a recent spec change... Cheers
