Faulty ALTERNATOR or not
Hi to all
May I wish all the best for the Holly Days and New Year ahead!
The other day the red battery light came on the dashboard (while driving).
I checked the Voltage with IID tool and while engine idle the reading was 13.4V, driving was 13.6V With the light constantly ON fault was "P0625-00 (2f) Unknown". I erased the fault, which was coming on each time I started the DISCO.
Parked the car at home, the next morning DISCO started OK, read battery light had disappeared, readings were while driving 15,4V. After a short stop in a battery workshop (to check the price for new battery), readings while driving were 14.4V...
I checked with LR workshop who monitored both batteries ( I have the traxide system with main and 2nd battery) and advised that batt require replacement (main battery 3 years old, second one 5 years old). Workshop ALSO advised to replace the alternator (which as per the technician shows signs of wear eg. voltage 13.6V or 15.4V while driving as stated above) and maybe in a month, few months will be DEAD), replace the main battery and not to use again the Traxide system...
My questions are (having in mind that in few days I will travel 1000miles)
1) does Alternator really require replacement??
2) should I replace main battery and monitor Voltage readings ?????
YOUR ADVISE would be much appreciated
HAPPY NEW YEAR AHEAD

You have a dying alternator, it's very common they become erratic exactly as you describe.
When it does finally fail, and believe me it will, it'll very probably take your battery with it due to a dead short.
Replace that alternator with a Denso now or you'll very much regret it. Mods:

When mine failed, same symptoms as you are describing, I stopped driving, changed the alternator, and avoided damaging the battery. Better safe than sorry.Richard

Hi
Thnx to both of you!!!
I have ordered a DENSO alternator!
Anyone knows what brand is the original installed alternator???
I have heard that BOSCH alternator (for disco) could be refurbished, while DENSO couldn't...
cheers

OEM is denso.
There are many problems if denso is not used.

Denso is OE.
Many have tried aftermarket alternators, with poor results. The overwhelming advice on here is to use Denso.
Snap ^^ too slow to type!Richard

Similar issue
My battery went dead on my D3, 2008 (MY09) model..
I've had the car for 3 years and when the mechanic replaced the battery, he also said the Alternator was on the way out - the Alternator is charging at around 13.6 volts. Is 13.6 volts really indicative of a worn out alternator (because some youtubers say below 13 volts is bad).
If it times to replace, I've found a distributor, but i'm unsure which Alternator (see attachments) :
is it the 12 Volt, 150 AMP or 12 Volt, 130 AMP?
Below is the listing, and my car is manufactured in June 08 (although an MY09 model).
Discovery, Series 3 Nov-04 406PN, 6 cyl, 4.0L Petrol Auto DXA4021 155 MXS307 390
Discovery, Series 3 Nov-04 448PN V8 [M62B44], 8 cyl, 4.0L Petrol DXA588 151
Discovery, Series 3 Oct-08 4394, 6 cyl, 4.0L Petrol BXA011 113
Discovery, Series 3 Oct-08 B09195 B, 8 cyl, 4.0L Petrol DXA588 151
If indeed my car is meant to to be the second last in the list, then that would be the 12 Volt, 130 AMP model.

Is does depend on external temperature ( amongst other things ) and it should show an initial rise in charging current from cold start but it is currently summer in the Southern Hemisphere so at 13.6v, you might be ok but it does seem low.
Here in the frozen plains of Cheshire, it's normally around freezing at this time of year and charging will be around 15v or more at first start up, dropping to above 14v after a while.
If you're not currently suffering any symptoms, leave it and see how things go.
However, you need to be aware, a failing alternator will often kill a perfectly healthy battery due to a dead short. Did you ever get to the bottom of what killed your previous battery?Mods:

The battery died due to a failed cell.
Would you know which Alternator is meant to be mine from the list in my post? Thanks.

Your car is a Diesel, all those in your list are petrol.

Haynes is a publisher of car manuals in the UK, very popular in the past when all you had to worry about was a dizzy and 1 1/4 SU carb' . Never known to be wrong so do check the fitment info. AF on here would be a good source.
