Thinking of getting a D3 V8 |
|
Hi all, first post here, as I am currently giving serious thought to a D3 V8.
I've always loved the D3 - and in my eyes look better than the D4. I did look at the D5, but I don't really feel a love for it.
D3 V8 is also attractive, as I live in a post code that will fall inside the London LEZ in a couple of years, and happily the V8 is Euro4 and thus compliant. Exactly none of my other cars are! Also, this may be one of the last chances to own a V8 as everything will ultimately go electric I suspect...
There's a few D4s around the country on Autotrader. Most have done big miles. But the V8 seems to take these miles with relative ease?
So, my questions are:
1. What are they like to live with (this will be the "family adventure vehicle" - we have other cars, so this isn't a daily driver, but a high-days and epic holiday vehicle
2. What should I be looking out for (major service points, suspension replacements etc)
Thanks!

We own 2 D3 4.4 V8's. The D3 V8 is a great reliable truck as long as the the oil has been changed on time. The 4.4 V8 is more reliable than the 5.0 V8 on the D4. Which has issues with the timing chain tensioners.
Just make sure the D3 has had the plastic oil separator replaced and the coolant plastic T pipe. Both cheap replacements. The D3 V8 engine is a solid and probably the most reliable of the LR group. Have all the services done diff's, TC and Tranny. There is a list. Besides that it will go to about 300K with out any major issues. Oh yes and make sure it has no water coming in from the sunroof drains or through the cowl or A pillars. I have had no issues with suspensions.

In answer to your questions:
1. Easy to live with, once you have it up to par. Mine is not a daily driver and had only had 1 owner with 55k on it before me but still needed a few essential V8 things sorted. Keep the battery on a conditioner if it's likely to sit for weeks without being used.
2. Rather than service stamps I would look for receipts for parts and service work done. The more that a car has been well looked after the better it will drive and serve you. All UK V8 D3 will be at least 13 years old and at that age will need things sorting. I would look for a car without LPG, others will say different
Do a search on here ( V8 )and you will see that a lot of them, throttle body,pv valve, MAF can be done by yourself.

The D3 V8 is the best car I’ve ever owned. I like it more than the D4 TDV6 I had previously.
The others have mentioned what is useful to replace. Another thing are spark plugs. Cheap to replace, too. Other issues are the same as with other D3s - suspension, EAS, etc.

T-piece = coolant all over the engine compartment. You’ll know
PCV valve = weird engine behavior like lots of smoke, misfires, low power

In the US even high mile ones are now bout 7-12K which means they hold their value. The D4 V8 which does not have a reliable engine is higher in price, but to me not as valuable due to the engine.
