Hi all - and merry Christmas and happy New Year.
We're off to Tas tomorrow for 8 days - last trip in the D2 we did west coast pretty thoroughly. This time - we're spending most of the time camped on the beach at Bay of Fires near St Helens...
Anyone know of some nice day trips near Bay of Fires, for the days we don't want to just sit on the beach?
cheers,

There is a good locally published 4wd drive book called “Off-road Tasmania†www.roving.com.au just go to any book shop in the larger towns ie Devonport or Launceston and they will have one. Also call into any local forestry office they should have some information on some good tracks.
If you get time there is one of the scariest roads I have been on , it runs from Cethana to Lorinna (Sheffield-Moina area), it is cut high into the side of a mountain, it has one lane only, no guard rails and +200 m drop off to the side (It is shear terror when you run into some one coming the other way, and you have to reverse). It leads to a semi alternative settlement that has no Mains power supply, they have a general store (solar powered)where you can get a good cup of tea.
Cheers
Troy Trust me, what could go wrong?

Thanks for that Troy - didn't end up doing much off-road work, except in the Perron Dunes nr St Helens, and had a great time overall.
I've posted a few pics at:

Simon,
Looks like you had a good trip.
I'm planning heading down there at Easter. Damned expensive for the D3 plus van on the ship . 12 years ago my WRX only cost $95 return with a package deal, Looks like around $470 now.

Chris<
you should only be paying $61 each way for the D3!
From TT lines website:
"Vehicle Type Length (m) Year Round Rate
Standard Car < 2m wide 0.1 - 5.0 $61 "
The D3 is 4.8M long
The Van of course I don't know but I guess your overall length (D3 and van) is between 9-10 metres?
peter regards
Peter

Peter,
The combined D3 + van will probably be around 11m = $293 per trip

Chris,
CLEARLY, you are used to far too much luxury with such a large van
Why not take a tent? The warm Tassie Summer night air will be invigorating regards
Peter

I think that Chris is very wise taking the van.
I have been to Tassie a number of times in the last 20 years bushwalking, and each time it has snowed
( even in January)
Chris, I have read that there are sections on the S.O.T. (Spirit of Tassie) that are exposed to the salt spray
Make sure that your rig will be undercover

Having lived in Hobart from 1976 until 1993 and returning annually to visit parents, The only place that I have found that gets salt spray is when doing the Titanic scene at the front (well side actually) of the ship
The car decks are fully enclosed (to my knowledge) and I have not experienced any water or salt on the vehicle.
Unless you are talking about the old Empress of Australia, NOW that was a REAL ship, even had watertight doors with large coamings to step over and that beautiful sea salt and Diesel smell
Yes, I admit it, I was being flippant about the tent but do you really need the spa and jacuzzi in the monster van?? regards
Peter

Hi Chris,
We were in Tassy last April. We decided against camping and stayed in various holiday houses - cheap as chips over there. We booked it all through this website:-
http://www.takeabreak.com.au/
The $$ you save on the boat could cover 2/3 night accom, the fuel you save would also be signifcant and you dont need to fk around with the van whlist touring.
just a thought... Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

Peter,
I note that you didn't refute the snow in January
Chris' van is a Kimberley Karavan
I don't think that he has fitted a spa,
Yet
