| 2nd Set Rims & Offroad Tyres |

Guys,
After rolling our d2 in the wet on BFG AT, on our new d3 I want to keep road tyres (currently Pirelli Scorpion Zero) on our standard rims, and get a second set of rims/tyres for offroad only.
I am open to either 17" or 18" rims depending on the tyre I choose. Rims can be either genuine or aftermarket, pending price.
In terms of tyres I want something with good puncture resistance and good dirt grip. I tend to do places like Blue Mtns, South Coast NSW, Vic High Country, Corner Country. More rocky than muddy ... unless this rain keeps up.
I had BFG AT on the d2, which I was happy with offroad, but awful onroad -- hopefully things have got better since then.
Q1 - What are the top picks for tyres in 17" and 18" in an All-Terrain ?
Q2 - What rims are around at a good price ?

Hi Scott,
My opinion is to go for 17"s not only because I have a set for sale, but also because the tyres are cheaper, and you can go for bigger size tyres, i.e. 265/60/17 etc. which will give you extra lift off-road, and you already have 18"s for the road.
My 2c worth.

I am runing the 17' cooper stt's, on steel rims - I am very happy with them (I do the same sort of off-roading as you do) and the price was acceptable to swtsmbo

I'm running Cooper ATR 255/65 on 17 inch rims. Have done Gibb River without any problems. The have also been on Moreton Island, Stockton Beach and AWABA (a disused quarry). They have about 15k on them now and looking good! Take the road less traveled. Dual battery system.ORS drawers,LR cargo Barrier.ARB Bull bar,side protection bars,Mickey Thompson ATR's 17" rims, Rear wheel carrier, radiator guard TPMS Mitchell Bros Tow Hitch LR RAI Steel Rims , GME UHF, Off Road GPS, Llams (yet to be fitted)

Don't even think about 18" or 19" tyres if you are going to do a lot of low tyre pressure driving.

There seems to be a lot of support for the General Grabber AT 2.
Regarding the comment from Desert Traveller, whilst there is clearly more choice in smaller sizes see the article in Dec 07 4x4 Australia comparing performance of low profile tyres against higher profiles.
They did tests on various surfaces, including sand, and found that the argument was no longer so simple. By varying tyre pressures they apparently achieved more with the current generation of low profile tyres than you would expect - and also retained better on-road performance...
Anyway, shall be interested to hear what you decide.

I managed to score some 17inch LR wheels, wrapped them in Copper ATR LT265/70/17, and have never looked back. No rubbing, bit more clearance, all good.

The problem with most tyre tests done by 4x4 magazines and others is that the vehicles are lightly loaded and they are not testing for durability. As per my comments previously, I believe for short trips low profile tyres do not present any problems (just lower the pressures as per the 4X4 article). The problems occur when you drive all day for days on end at these lower pressures.
For short trips and short sessions at low pressure the 18" tyres present no problems. 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

I changed onto cooper ST LT245/70 17" over 20,000km ago. I have run them as low as 8LB front 10LB rear and as high as 50LB all round for Highway. They have a 10 ply rated carcass with a load rating of 119. No punctures in that time, with very heavy usage off road. Max load for a recent desert trip was 2000kg on back axle and 1500 on front, yes that is well over max GVM with all fuel tanks full, water tank full and 2 weeks supplies on board. They handle fine wet and dry but do have a hum to them, not intrusive. Price around $300 each. They are very soft when new, if possible buy them and put them away to cure for 3 months before usage in rocky terrain, 3 months road use would be ok. They have not developed any problems with pull to one side as I had experienced with the standard wrangler HP's

No rubbing at all, taking into acount that on 18 and 19" wheels they tyre fitments are I think 255 the 245 goes well.

Seems the Cooper ST is the best size/tread combo for me on 17" rims.
I am just worried about Cooper with all the delaminating stories, including people I know with D2's.

Yes, I have heard of the problem for a period last year. I mentioned storing them for a while before using them as mine were very fresh and soft when fitted, it took about 3 months for them to toughen up and they were prone to chipping when new. They are very solid after about 7 months use. I took them on as they have a massive load rating as well as compatible size. Make sure you get an LT rated set as the diferent sizes have quite a variation in load rating and a wrong choice could lead to the delamination issues. Also note that they run up to 80lb pressure at full load, low pressure road running would lead to the carcass overheating easily. I run mine 50lb on the road.

As a guide for rubbing, I'm running 275.65.18 Cooper ST as a second set.
At the rear, they rub slightly on full compression (at both front & back of the guard, not the top) and at the front they rub slightly on full lock, but on the chassis behind the wheel, so it doesn't matter.
I suspect when they wear the corners off a bit they won't rub at all on the front. 2007 TDV6 SE Stornoway Gray
