For any tech nerds out there

This site has always been full of fantastic people and the information they share is priceless. So here's one for the pot; no reply required. Driving up the M11 one day when my faithfull and constantly used CC switch failed to engage the throttle. Devastated I continued my drive using only a Mk1 right foot. Following day hoping the one of gods would smile down on me tried the switch again. Clearly members of the deity group dislike me. However got to get to site so back on M11. Suddenly I heard the famous "bong", looked down to see one after another warning lamp come on. You name it, I had a warning lamp telling me something terrifyingly expensive was about to happen. From HDC (on the M11?) to transmission failure. And when I arrived on site I struggled to pull the key out of the ignition. The whole bag! But, hold, on the old gel was driving perfectly as usual. Two days later turned up at Graywall's in Abridge. Now if you're still awake the technical interesting bit. As you know most workshops will turn off the auto headlamps when the vehicle is being worked on which is exactly what Graham did. Hey pesto the key was easily removed from the ignition switch. Turn on the auto headlamps and eventually, not immediately, all the problems returned. Turn it off and all the problems disappeared. So now you're all thinking big and expensive ECU, BAA, EPB, FBH, BBC, soggy Rolo lubricating the ignition switch ect would be the cause. Nah. Try a faulty stop and tail lamp bulb I fitted just before the M11 drive! Am I a happy bunny;Yep. Will I play golf in a thunderstorm: if I played that silly game it would not be a problem. All the best out there. 😎

Thanks Olddiver... very helpful!
Forgive my colleagues...they are their usual playful self! Very Happy

This is a known issue using cheapy bulbs hence you have to source certain parts from quality factors...
The Discovery is incredibly sensitive electronically and if the parameters of resistance differ from its known mapping it will send the vehicle into self preservation mode and shut things down...

Your brake light switch will do exactly the same thing... if you haven’t changed it yet be prepared...it’s a cheap Ford branded part which as it wears creates a resistance or arcing across its contacts and will throw the same faults...

Advanced Factors is a parts specialist that many of us use on here because he knows most of the issues and thus only supplies certain brands!

By the way welcome to the forum! Very Happy

A useful reminder Olddiver.

Just remember to carefully read all future posts by certain members and be ready to point out the grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors in their posts - could provide entertainment for months!! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
