Roof mounted DVD for the kids.... |
|
Hi all
Being a relatively new owner, I am a little unversed in wise ways of safely modifying my Disco3.
I would like a roof mounted DVD player to keep the kids amused (and me sane) on long journies.
So I rang my local dealership and they quoted me....wait for it..............£2,087 plus labour. Even the lady at the dealership started giggling...
I have no wish to install such a piece of machinery myself, so can anyone recommend where I can a) peruse a range of suitable DVD players; b) buy the roof mounted DVD player; c) have it professionally installed (without losing the warranties for the rest of the car etc).
I don't really want a bargain basement DVD player that will go wrong after a few weeks, but equally I'm convinced that a half-decent player with a solid installation really can't cost the best part of £3k.
Any thoughts much appreciated. Happy New Year!!
Cheers

Hello Pabloelchico and welcome to the site. I'm sure you will enjoy D3 ownership as much as the rest of us do!
One of the site sponsors "Prestige Audio" supplies and fits this kit but I have no idea of the cost. Too much intellectual firepower can damage your common sense.

Looks like you have an HSE right ? I would also be interested in finding something that worked with the Alpine roof.

There has been a system on ebay over the last few weeks by a company in Suffolk. They were quoting £995 fitted within a reasonable distance from Suffolk and it looked pretty good - think it could of been a twin screen roof mounted.
Can't find them now, but they have been on and off, so keep looking.

Hi Martin
Yep, an HSE.
I can't really see how the LR option of one screen can fit in the middle given the gubbins already on the roof. Prestige audio, one of the site sponers, that James mentioned have a couple of twin screen options, but unsurprisingly no-one is there at the minute to chat to re cost.
cheers

I have a HSE which came with the Rosen DVD fitted. Fits fine with the Alpine roof etc. But the only problem I have is the loss of visablity from the rear view mirror. The screen and the centre head rest obscures the view completely. As you slide down the banister of life

Dont you have exterior mirrors then
Centre DVD is fine but i'd fold it up if you go off road

Exterior mirrors... what are they for Oh I know, putting your lippy on BEFORE you get in the car!
Only really use DVD on long trips when kids get bored... and do use exterior mirrors for their purpose As you slide down the banister of life

I'm no technician: but with the help of this post, 2 hours graft and £170 you can get a great result. The Rosen A-7 is the same as the factory fit option but it's just smaller, then again this helps the rear view issue that central roof mounted devices bring.

Can be had for a lot less than £170. Only prob is mine is still in its box. Not got to the bottom of the power issue (ie dont want to mount a switch) and cant work out how to mount the unit (not tried hard yet).

Mine was fitted free as a promotion. It's not worth the LR prices though. Prestige seem to offer a lot more for your money. Disco 5 HSE Lux

how about these guys.... used them myself to find out a problem on the ecu on our td5, putting in a dvd player would be easy given the electrical works they do on the emergency vehicles...charge out at approx £43 per hour

Look here, the monitor retails for less than 400, the DVD changer I used for about 190, installation would take about 3hrs tops. Gives you a 6disc DVD/CD changer and also provides IR headphone fee, alternatively you can run the monitor aux out to the car aux in socket for feed to the speakers. PM if you need any more info...

I have seen these at £139 since I bought mine last year.....there isn't a power issue - you dont have to fit a switch, just run a wire all the way through the roof lining and into the engine bay where it can be ignition switched....I just fitted a 12v cut off switch as its bloody easier and the mount is simple D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

All this pushing wires in roof lining and finding the right place to join it up for power is ok but I will be fine with it once I have finished ie dont know how you do this!!! Also the mounting is a pain - ie you need to fit some wood to mount the unit to but how did you attach the wood to the car? Did you drill some holes for self tappers?
