knocking noise - 2 video clips loaded on youtube |
|
Hello,
I am almost at my wits with this knocking noise with vibration. Hope you will see and hear the 2 video clips on youtube and narrow down the fault.
I have changed 3 front shafts TDB500100/TVB500510/TDB500110 and the noise is still there. Done a gear box flush.
1. ...video_user
Hear the sound in the first 5 seconds and from the 20 seconds onwards.
2. ...ideo_user.
Thanks
Indi

A few years ago i had a L322 range rover that made that noise. It was the splines on the front diff slipping and gradually got worse untill it lost drive altogether. Not sure if the D3 has a similar setup or not but may be worth checking?

Have you had the gearbox oil changed ? I see from your profile it is an auto, i have had some auto making a vibration from the auto trans. Never had this noise but from your video it looks like it has done a few miles so might be worth a punt ?

The gear box was flushed recently. The odometer is in kilometers and now about 121k or about 75k miles. I just wish what ever is going to give way to give way soon so that the repairs can be carried out. I just dont want thing to break at the crucial moment, when i need to pick up speed especially with 2 kids on tow!
So should I just remove the prop shaft to have a visual inspection? I heard from somewhere that when you fit back you need use the computer to calibrate?

well the knocking sound from the under carriage is very loud under heavy acceleration and then it disappers. It comes back whenever at low speeds when the accelerator is floored. You dont get it at hight speeds. Normal driving you dont get the knocking sound. Up hill at low speeds when floored again the sounds comes and there is some vibration. The steering is not effected.
I have added a file on ZF Trouble Shooting Guide in PDF format in my gallery.

It only happens when I put the paddle to the floor. But under normal driving you dont hear that sound and on slow tight turns it does not happen

It sounds like the ABS activating? Have you managed to isolate where it is coming from? A wheel or the drivetrain? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

The sounds seems to be coming from the under carriage and I understand that ABS is in front and the wheels are not locking and neither do i feel there is a retard in speed or something pulling back the D3.
"So should I just remove the prop shaft to have a visual inspection? I heard from somewhere that when you fit back you need use the computer to calibrate?" I hope someone can answer this question as this is the next thing i feel like taking apart for a visual inspection

With that noise I recon if it is the rear prop shaft bush then it would be obvious. You need to get someone to diagnose it properly. Have you taken it to a mech? Take it over the border if you need to. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I live in Thailand Krabi, and the nearest LR independent mechanic is in Phuket about 180kilometers. I have a mechanic here but he knows nuts about LR but he is ok. So does one need to calibrate after taking out the prop shaft for inspection?
The previous diagnose were all wrong by the Phuket mechanic
