6CD-465 keeps losing volume but screen on and cd is playing. |
|
Hello
I'm very new to D3 ownership and already having problems - although I have to say I love the car.
The CD player worked when I got it but then one day I got in and there was no volume - if you turned the volume knob it didn't do anything. I can choose radio or CD and both are playing but just no sound.
Read up on web forum and did a hard reset. Stereo then had volume again for 3 journeys. Then got in and no volume again!!!
Is the stereo knackered or is there a way to permanently fix this?
Thanks everyone.

Welcome
I had a problem with my audio when I first purchased the vehicle.
No audio, started off intermittent and gradually got worse.
I managed to borrow a head unit for test purposes and confirmed that the
problem persisted. Turns out the AMP was faulty, picked one up relatively cheaply
via the well known auction site and all has been good since then

Thanks.
Oh no - looks like that is at least £120-150 - with other stuff to fix too I was hoping it might be a cheaper solution....

It feels like it might be cheaper to think about swapping out the stereo / amp for something better with Bluetooth / DAB but I read somewhere that you can only do this if you have the base model..?
I think mine isn't the base model but how do I tell if it actually is? Can anyone help with some advice?

6CD-465 (in the subject) is not the base stereo. It is a 6-CD changer and has a numerical keypad. Depending on amp it’s either highline (Harman-Kardon) or premium (Harman-Kardon Logic 7). The amp should be in your case under the driver’s seat as you’re in U.K. and have a RHD vehicle. For HKL7 I think the amp had a black color and was silvery if it is a regular HK one. Unfortunately the part codes are on the bottom, not on top. Usually the speakers in front also say HK or HKL7 (not abbreviated). If it has been upgraded by someone the speakers might not have the correct text.
If in doubt, take a picture.

My vehicle Reg document says that I have an S.
Interior is cloth and manual seats etc.
Rear of the car says 'autobiography' though - not s / hs or hse

Update. Think it must be the stereo as I have done a hard reset twice and both times the volume has come back for a period of time - then about the third time of starting the car up the volume goes again. I am deducing from this that it is not the amp.
Anybody had one of these 6CD changers fixed?

When battery voltages are low the car will go into protect mode to minimise power usage. One of the first things is the radio goes into low power mode (you this display) where volume is limited - if power drops off further the radio has no volume with no display - similar symptoms that you have.
So while you may have radio issues - check the condition of your battery and charging system first.

So it does now look as if it could be the amp
Does anyone know if I can fit a Harman Kardon amp from a disco4 as a replacement for the one in my disco3??
Can anyone recommend anyone in south yorks who might be able to trace the problem definitively as I really don't want to fork out for a new amp if that is not the problem....
Thanks everyone for trying to help.
Ps. Battery is fine

Use lrcat (or something more official) to figure out whether the amps are equivalent w.r.t. part number.
I don’t think they are identical, at least, since D3 high and premium line are Hartman/Kardon (American) while the corresponding ones for D4 are Meridian (British).
