Had the same idea Baden, For better deflection the material I am going to use will be a smooth type, similar to the tarpaulin on the rooftop tent.
On my old vehicle (Jeep) I had magnetic sheeting which I cut out to fit the rear door & side panels protection from scratches. On the D3 however, the rear window is so large & upright that even that may get damaged. So yes, I agree, mud flaps may help but the final solution would be the cover over the trailer. got the template made, now just need time tot get to the tarp manufacturer in edenvale. hope to get to it next week _ been in _amsterdam this week, but sitting at H-row right now for my flight back to the sun

Herewith the pics of the "nose - protector" I had made. I attached it with eye-bolts and clips, so it is easily sremovable (though not sure why I would remove it) cost me R400 from a local mate dickson, who custom-makes covers for all type of stuff

Seems we had similar ideas. I have used mine in earnest & so far no backlash of stones onto the rear of the vehicle.
