Rev Fluctuation / Grinding Noise
Hi All
We have a 2005 TDV6 Auto HSE with 160k on the clock and for the last 10k the revs have been fluctuating, this is also accompanied by a grinding noise every time the revs jump and its been getting worse.
I have taken it to a few different garages in bristol. Ive had both EGR valves changed as they were apparently both not working and the hose for the turbo was replaced as it had a leak. Neither of these helped
Does anyone know what this might be or have any suggestions for what I should be getting checked?
Thanks

Have you checked the oil level in the auto box ? That would probably be the first job, but I'm afraid it does rather sound like a torque converter and/or auto g/box problem, and the damage may already have been done. All the major drivetrain components on these vehicles need frequent oil changes, (more so than LR recommend), but sadly many owners do not bother with this until it is too late........I think 'Bristol Transmissions' have a good reputation, (from peeps views on this forum ),they may be able to advise you.

I haven't had it checked but will, Have contacted Bristol transmissions going to hopefully get in there soon and they said they would take it for a road test. Thank you for you the recommendation!

I have that during light acceleration. Revs are fluctuating and there is slight noise followed by revs dropping and once more revs going up grinding noise and revs going down..... Any official procedure to do?
Car is : LR3 05reg 118k full LR service.
Have you changed the gearbox oil, or better still had a MegaFlush?

When and how are the revs fluctuating? - if it's when you're stationary it's not the transmission. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Megaflush hmmmmmm.... never I suppose as I just bought it. Im on the case with Geoff hopefully as I have PMd him and waiting for response.
Fluctuation happens 1800-2000 rpm when on cruise control doing 70PMH especially up the hills. We went to Sheffield on A1M Sat and Sunday trip and that was noticeable up the hills.
Also during acceleration. When I put my foot down it will drop 1 or 2 gears down, then will fluctuate constantly while climbing up the speedo.
When it happens I can hear slight grinding noise and instant de-acceleration follower by revs going up acceleration and grinding noise and RPM drops. Over and over again till I take my foot of acceleration or when road evens out.
Not sure about the performance, but acceleration is sluggish, hesitant compared to times when not fluctuating - I imagine that is normal. I have tried checking the fuel economy and on the way to Sheffield from Corby over A1M I have managed 27.2MPG driving 65-70MPH even tried following a white van for 20miles also 70MPH. All elec comfort seats, heaters a-con were off.
Is that normal? I have heard about someone here managing 40.4MPG on 10mile streshes on motorway tests.
thanks

Hi All
It took me a while to get the D3 into Bristol transmissions! But they sorted the problem, it was the torque converter. They said they do a LOT of these with the same issue.
Car drives like new now! Very happy with the work Bristol transmissions have done!
Thanks again for all the advice!

It can be as the input shaft spins with the engine even in neutral & park.

faliriotis, LR's policy is for gearbox oil change at 240K kms, but forum experts agree that it should be at about every 100K kms.
Therefore they are prone to failure. Also a newer version of the torque converter has been manufactured which is better. Most also get the steel sump and removable oil filter fitted (which is a BMW part I think).
Further, some of those of us who are getting repairs due to not having changed the oil in the gearbox are also having separate oil cooling radiators fitted as the original is shared with the water system and is prone to leaking, causing the gearbox to fail. No point in getting the gearbox repaired for it to fail for a different reason. What else might need changing in your gearbox is down to it being examined. The solenoid block might need replacing or servicing.
Mine is going to Bristol in the morning for a new TC.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

Hi guys. Absolutely essential to do a megaflush max every 100,000 kms. Change all your coolant liquid, brake fluid and diff and trans box fluids every 50,000 kms and your Landy will treat you great.
