They could easily realease a software patch that brings up a low oil level warning on the dash when the level gets to say half way.
Is there any where obj the sump a second level eye coul be fitted? I use them at work, very reliable. You remind me of a younger me, not much younger mind...perhaps even a little older!

Where’s the fun for them in that? They wouldn’t sell as many replacement engines.

Just read this complete thread.....
And here was me contemplating getting out of my incredibly economical & reliable FL2, to pay wads more cash just to get back into a slightly newer D4.
It's these sort of horror stories that chill me to the core!!
Sorry to hear about your experience, I really do feel for you. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Having slept on it....I'm in a worse mood now
I can probably categorically say, that for all but 3 yrs of my driving life, I have been in the category of car owners who think:
'The MOT is due, I wonder what the oil level is like. Hmmm, when did I last check it...probably last MOT'
I bought the FL2, and that had the oil cooler problem, which I repaired.
Before getting the D4, I read up on this website. From the day I worked out how to do it, I have religiously checked the oil level.
For the oil filter to cause this, is such a smack in the teeth.
Unfortunatly, SWMBO has a theory:
Cheap cars can go wrong, and expensive cars can go wrong. Expensive cars cost more to fix, therefore you need to replace this with a cheap car....

Do you know for sure it was the oil filter?- if so was it genuine LR?
You have my greatest condolences. I hope it has no bearing on the situation and I am superstitious, but you joined this forum on Friday 13 It can when others can't,

Isn’t the D4 filter idiot-proof, unlike the D3 filter?

It is, but not if it has been overtightend and the threads damaged on the plastic housing allowing it to blow off under pressure, oil pressure could be as high as 60psi It can when others can't,

I am only going on what Steve Norman has told me over the phone.
The last service was done in March/April last year. I was planning when the next one was going to be.
Don't know what brand filter it is.MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

Is there nowhere on the engine that a good old fashioned mechanical oil pressure gauge be connected to?

I used to check mine literally at the start of every trip - I know the handbook states warm engine etc. but my logic was even if cold, I see a consistent level of Ok - only issue I had was when it was really, cold negative temperatures it wouldn’t get a reading.
I also changed oil every 6 months - but that was more due to concerns about the dreaded issue.
Anyway, good luck with LR - you may get luckyNow Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

I had similar on old bus where LR tech must have put fitler housing in incorrectly and seal was cut sipping oil out resulting in 1 lt of oil in V cavity
Was well lucky I do spot ckecks all the time so motor was fine.
Really bad situation to be in.

The begging question is, are you likely to have any comeback against whoever did the last oil change?
