seriously considering a D4 |
|
having been a long time LR fan of nearly all the models over the years, the Freelander 2 and now Evoque have been my 'sensible' choices, but as with many modern LR owners ive always had a secret crush on the D2/D3/D4.
I did own a D2 for a short while which was soured by a bad dealer experience but ive always been looking when bored at D3 and D4.
the one below is for sale near me at a mid sized sales garage and im just looking for peoples thoughts on it
https://www.jct29select.co.uk/used-land-ro...re-1989170
im aware the last MOT a year ago gave advisories for the front bushes, which isn't uncommon, and its something to throw into any haggling I may do.
im still not sold on the idea given standard running costs being high and the infamous crankshaft issue but D4 is the last of the 'proper' LR in my opinion and it might be rude to not try and own one.
TIA

Looks a nice car
All the usual comments: check service history; test drive; check all buttons work; what use has it had - motorway/short runs in town; any off-roading; have the belts been done. Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

hi
thanks for the response,
I need to have a think first if I really really want to go for a D4, I don't really NEED a D4 as my Evoque does pretty much everything I need except for putting my dog cage into.
But for that one (and any I look at) I need to check the service history (are belts 100k as on the D3? ) and V5 to see who has owned it.
Ive not looked at it yet in the flesh but may well drop in on my way home today for 1st glance over it.

Belts are 112,000 or 7 years, which ever is sooner on a D4
And you know with Land Rovers NEED doesn't feature in any of the man-maths calculations Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

See if you can find a stop/start one as road tax quite a bit cheaper, mot sure when they came out?

I think it was 2015 - stand to be corrected
Slightly Off-Topic - I understand the fuel saving benefits of stop/start but it does seem a bit counter-intuitive based on what I've read about letting Turbo's warm down on idle to prolong Turbo life?
I turn it off in my Golf - is it necessary to do that? Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Dropped in to view the one I linked to. Garage were up front and honest to be fair.
Few touched up stone chips and surface scratches. Parking sensors all round are looking rough but overall a decent enough looking D4 although I didn't look inside it and it was a 1 owner motor.
But....that owner was SHB hire and they had serviced it up to 95k and the garage said they would service it before sale at 118k. However the belts didn't need changing until next year at 7 years old
So I walked away.. shame really but plenty more out there

Stop Start's never worked on my 2014 in the 2 years I've owned it, despite being into the dealer on 4 occasions to try and fix it, and I'm not an isolated case, I gave up in the end and just accepted that it'll never work.
I must admit that after 4 years of D4 ownership I'm now starting to look at alternatives - they're lovely cars don't get me wrong, but LR's refusal to acknowledge a few key issues that affect a large proportion of owners (heating, stop start, and crank shaft failure) has meant that I've lost my confidence in the car. Having been on the receiving end of an £18k bill when the crankshaft went on my last D4, and having owned my current one for 2 years and 40k+ miles I'm now feeling like I'm on borrowed time with it, not a situation that I should be in with a 4 year old car on 68k miles (that cost me over £40k to buy!).
Sorry to be a downer on them, but all stuff worth considering if you're looking at buying one, maybe look at some of the alternatives like the X5 and Touareg etc first?

We have stop-start on the Volvo and... what I would pay to not have it enabled at every start. “Everyone” agrees that it’s bad for the engine in the long run yet it cannot be disabled, one has to toggle it off. Only way it’s off by default is if you drive only a little and the car hasn’t charged the stop-start battery.

My perception is that stop/start gets one a reduction in tax, but otherwise is a
It must cause additional wear on the engine, starter motor etc.. so I disable it.

I make it part of the start routine before pulling away - press the off button - but occasionally forget.

Hi Rog
Does Ed know you've popped over here?
Seriously, really tempted to get back in a D4 myself.
No car on the planet does it better than a D4 IMO. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Shush Ron... nobody knows yet 😉😂
Freelanders are brilliant, they really are. And I do love my evoque but I just hadn't realised how much 2 doors only would cause me to rethink every day life.

They knew it was overdue belts, and If it hadn't of been an ex SHB vehicle I wouldnhave tried to get them to change them as part of any deal. But it's a big job and I don't think any dealer likes to change cam belts etc prior to sale.
