I fitted a spare wheel carrier 2 years ago and today decided to put another spare underneath as I get ready to head outback but cant get the cable down any further than about 4 inches. Will try to put some weight on the cable and see what happens.

Even the Abu Dhabi dealership bolloxed my winch when they replaced new 2 new tyres and a spare swop on my LR.

Guess what ?

After a blow-out on one of my equally useless Good Years, I tried to change the spare next to the road, the winch was broken. I could not get the spare out.

Replaced under warranty after they tried for 4 hours to remove the unit (with the spare hanging onto it), to claim the unit under warranty from the suppliers.

Replaced the factory fault with the same they did, albeit a new factory fault.

Boggles the mind really.

THE one thing you need on an off-road machine is a spare tyre.

Lucky for me the country is small. If it happens in the dessert I will call the Tow-Assist - free of charge.

anyone have tips for releasing the spare when the winch breaks?

my winch won't lift or lower the spare... which wouldn't be immediately concerning except that the spare has been swinging/bouncing a bit when offroad.

thanks!

Only way to get it out is to cut the cable Big Cry
It will probably take an hour or two, and you would need to keep the wheel jacked up, so that it does not fall on you and break a body part. As per my post above, the LR dealers in my case resorted to this technique after 4 hours of trying to unbolt the unit.

Not easy to reach the cable and most tools required for the job is to big to fit through the gaps in your rims.

Having said that, it good for us and bad for you. Keeps the wheel nickers out of easy business. I had a spare nicked, hence my sardonic tone. Mad

Good luck Thumbs Up

Baffled!! Shocked Anyone know how this annoying piece of scrap actually works? I stripped mine down after the cable jammed, fixed the cable, assembled the unit, tried it in a vice with weight on and it worked okay. Fitted to car, tried with wheel. NO GOOD! Evil or Very Mad Removed unit again, stripped it, cleaned grease out as I thought it was slipping. Worked well in vice with weight on. But on the car with a wheel. NO! Had about a 6 inches gap to unhook wheel from hook. Exclamation I thought maybe to centre shaft is slipping and shouldnt be so I drilled and pinned the plastic wheel to the shaft. That didnt work, nothing turned. Havent given up yet. I'm in the process of maufacturing a carrier to replace the OEM one. I'll keep everyone posted. Idea

See my later post "Wheel Winch Repair". Good Luck

Problem sorted

Made the fatal error of chucking the wheel with a cracked Cra Perrelli Zero (don't last more than 12 months here in Qatar) in the boot after dropping the spare. Wound the hanger back up and a week later when I got round to it, guess what, it wouldn't drop!! Got it fixed today, I hung off the cable (with my considerable weight with the Landie on Off Road) whilst my son wound up / down / up / down, and with a copious amount of WD40 she came free. Wont make that mistake again!!

Spare Wheel Winch Lube

Hi IEUAN,
WD40 would be the best unless you have removed the assembly from the car. Did you see my repair on this forum? Martin made it available in PDF. If you don't get it let me know and I will email to you.
All the best.

If it's still working just now
My advice would be slacken it to the ground and rub grease on the cable
And spray wd40 or similar into the mechanism.

Never try to lift it without any weight on it as this causes problems.

If it is knackered I think it was MPS trading in the site sponsors section were selling new ones for around £60

Thumbs Up

No it's certainly working at the moment, just want to see what i can do to keep it working - will certainly follow the WD40 route for now Thumbs Up

Great instructions though on the PDF, will certainly keep these on the PC, but hopefully won't really need to use them Thumbs Up

Hi don't let an air gun, puematic gun etc. near the winding bolt. It will break even a new one. Only wind it down and up by hand.... And I'd agree will all others only with wheel attached.

Seized spare wheel winchRepair

I managed to repair the seized spare wheel winch as follows:
Remove the winch. Drill out the rivets that join the 2 halves. Split the 2 halves using a hammer and cold chisel. Untangle the cable and rewind it onto the spool. Bolt the 2 halves together and refit to the vehicle. Never lower the cable without a weight or tension on it.
